  • Laura Ingalls Wilder's Name Being Stripped from Children's Literature Award

Apparently, one of the most talented writers in American literature is being removed from one of the most prestigious awards for Children's Literature because she wrote about her parent's views on Indians and Blacks during a period in history when settlers feared Indian attacks and Slavery was the hot topic of the day. As it was with statues or buildings that were named after controversial people, Wilder is being white-washed and silenced because she was reflecting on personal experiences during a time that we have no understanding of. When I studied as a History major, I was warned against two deadly sins when conducting a Historical analysis: Presentism (applying modern-day values to past times and events) and Anachronism (applying a custom or event in the wrong timeframe). In the name of Political Correctness, changing the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award to the Children's Legacy Literature Award is a blatant act of Presentism and it leads to ignorance. If people rewrite history or whitewash it, history is guaranteed to be repeated.

As I was reading the article, a quote from Orwell's 1984 (that ironically, a lot of liberals like to tout these days) speaks to this: “Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book was rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.”

Stop falsifying history to support your own conclusions!

We should ban all history that says stuff we don't like! That way we only remember how great everything has always been! No more Nazi's or wars! No more racism! No more slavery!

Have they begun editing out the parts of her book that they don't like yet? If not, that will be next. To create sanitized versions of history you have to make changes.

      ETA - yep!

      From the article above:

"In 1935's Little House on the Prairie, for example, Wilder described one setting as a place where "there were no people. Only Indians lived there." That description was changed in later editions of the book. "

This is why things like Project Gutenberg are so valuable, to maintain a readily accessible archive of original, unedited literature.

Until they cart you off to a reeducation camp for sensitivity training

Oh no! They are censoring the historians! That's the first step in controlling history!

Now all we have left is some odd number KE7 something or other. Maybe it is her prisoner number in the reeducation camp.

Looking it up, it seems that change was done with the author's explicit authorization. I don't really see an issue with the author of a book wanting to make a change to subsequent editions.
