I think I've mentioned before - my wife works at Texas A&M, and is in a position that deals with PhDs all the time, including those ready to graduate and PhD candidates.

Those who are in "teaching" are, for the most part, rude, arrogant, and tend to have a whole lot of book learning, but not much common sense or real world experience. These guys can't figure out how to load paper in the copier, set up the video conferencing system... They need help with just about everything, and they have an "air" when "asking" for help.

Those who are in "extension" are, for the most part, just downright "salt of the earth" decent people with real world knowledge, experience, "can do" attitudes....

She's gotten where she can pretty well tell which they are at first meeting.

I understand he's in his 30s, but frankly, he acts like a know-it-all 19-year old who only recently completed his first year of college.

I don't know that I'd put those two in the same category. Tassman is much more articulate with his nonsense.

Sure, but to do so you're best to read a book by a modern historian about the idea. They will trace its origins through more different sources than you've got time to personally read. Another key difficulty in directly reading historical texts cover to cover is they usually interact heavily with particular ideas popular in their time period that you, the modern reader, might not be so familiar with or interested in. Marx for example, in his writings was primarily interacting with Hegel who had a complex theory about how ideas and humanity develop over time that's largely discarded today. So if you want to read Marx cover to cover, you probably first need to read Hegel cover to cover plus have a scholarly work or two to help you understand what on earth Hegel is talking about. A good compromise can be a 'reader' where a book is comprised of key sections of various different works on the topic with introductions to each section explaining their historical context.

The USSR did many horrible things in the name of communism
That's true. If I were a communist today that would concern me and I would want to confirm my views weren't likely to lead to that outcome. I am, however, not sure which part of "I'm not a communist, my views have little to nothing to do with communism" you guys are finding too difficult to understand. I guess you all think "socialism" = "communism", which is just false.

Doesn't seem to be a particularly meaningful question to me. Obviously we have countries that have laws and economic systems. When we tweak those things it affects the people in the country. What did Trump do with all the people who opposed his absurd tax cuts and massive increases in the deficit? Annoyed them.

That’s ironic since most of us here have college degrees. We’re just wondering how you got a degree without having to understand how the basics work. Of course I’ve known your kind. The kind that’s arrogant and feels they know everything, but is incapable of performing basic task.

There are some people in the world who prove that anybody can sit in the right classrooms for the right number of hours, and write enough BS that they eventually get a piece of paper that they can hang on their wall to impress their friends and the unsuspecting.

Oh yes there is. Being able to read a book, listen to lectures, and regurgitate whatever you read and heard onto a piece of paper isn’t overly difficult, but can be time consuming. I assume he had us pegged as country bumpkins that didn’t finish high school and doesn’t figure most of us have spent time in school and have at least one degree, a certification, or both.

One of the responsibilities my wife has is being a support specialist to several PhDs... she does the workflow for their publications, and they often have her proofread their writings... you would be amazed at the spelling and grammar errors...

The poster I'm referring to is a special case. Not only did he claim to have 5 PhDs he commonly made boasts like "Take Dawkins, Darwin and anyone of these evos [sic] and I have degrees in more fields than any combination of 3 [other scientists] put together."

At various different times he claimed that he was
                                • "a scientist in more than one field" while proclaiming that "Heliocentrism was wrong," and there are inorganic plants and animals.
                                • a surgeon with an entire slew of specialties including being a nuerosurgeron [sic], an otolaryngologist (treating disorders related to the head and neck), a plastic surgeon (claiming to do mammalplasties [sic]), performing stereotaxic surgery, cardiac surgery, spinal/pelvic surgery, orthopedic surgery, amputating limbs and even conducted kidney transplants, all while performing "aproxiamtely [sic] 400 circumcisions a week" at his clinic. All while saying things like "Phrenology has been verified more than 100 times" (that's the long discredited belief that the shape and size of the cranium can be used to determine a person's character and mental abilities) and a host of other simple bizarre medical mistakes.

It's quite a Curriculum Vitæ he has there and I'm sure I'm missing a few. He also frequently bragged that he is "God's favorite saint"

                                1. For the captain of a yacht to say he sails at "speeds of over 30 knots/hr" is like a NASCAR driver saying that he drives at 200 mph/hr. And I'd really like to know what solids he sails his yacht on. Further he made the mistake of naming the yacht club he was a commodore at and when contacted they denied having any members even remotely like him
