Boston weighs giving legal, non-US citizens voting rights

    Source: Boston.com/news

BOSTON (AP) — Non-U.S. citizens living in the country legally may one day be allowed to vote in Boston elections.

The City Council is holding a hearing Tuesday on the idea at the request of Council President Andrea Campbell. The council is considering ways to make city elections more inclusive, including allowing immigrants with legal status in the country the right to vote in municipal races.

That could include legal permanent residents, visa holders and those on Temporary Protected Status or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals.

Campbell’s order for a hearing says Boston has more than 190,000 foreign-born residents, which represents 28 percent of the city population. It also says non-U.S. citizens paid $116 million in state and local taxes and generated over $3.4 billion in spending according to a 2015 city report.

Let's try that on the state level, shall we? Alabamians get to vote absentee in Massachusetts!

Why limit everyone to just one vote? Just like the Pro Bowl, vote early and vote often!

That's usually the idea in democracy. The idea of restricting the vote to white land-owning males is long gone.

That is standard here in New Zealand for all elections. Any non-citizen, who isn't here just temporarily, can vote.

It also says non-U.S. citizens paid $116 million in state and local taxes and generated over $3.4 billion in spending according to a 2015 city report.
Do you believe in your country's historical slogan of "no taxation without representation"?

Given the criteria was "living in" or "resident" I don't know how you think this would apply.

I think resident pets should have a vote too.

Actually, no. Absolutely no. Most democracies have at least SOME restrictions, such as age of majority, and registration.

The idea of restricting the vote to white land-owning males is long gone.
In your little country, the land ownership requirement was only removed in 1879, and women allowed to vote in 1893.

That is standard here in New Zealand for all elections. Any non-citizen, who isn't here just temporarily, can vote.
You mean "permanent residents of New Zealand", which only happened in 1975, and one must still be at least 18 years of age to vote in your cute little hamlet.

So, no, even New Zealand doesn't allow just about ANYBODY to vote.

FYI, I am in favour of automatic voter registration and removing the age requirement. Voting should be open to everyone and I consider it a basic right (and duty).

In short I find your view, that it's bad to allow more people to vote, to be morally disgusting.

I also note you ignored the no taxation without representation question.

NZ was the first country in the world to give women the vote nationwide btw.

I missed this part.... That, of course, was a slogan of the colonists against the British. It's better expressed in the phrase "the consent of the governed" contained in our Declaration of Independence.

Either way, it works much better at the local level, and as get closer to DC, we pretty much lose all control.

Wait, WHAT? So, a FIVE YEAR OLD could vote? Somebody has 9 kids (as did my parents) and they could tell their kids, "OK, we're going to go to the polls, and we're all going to vote....." SERIOUSLY?

In short I find your view, that it's bad to allow more people to vote, to be morally disgusting.
Star, you're a drama queen - you'd find my use of tabasco on scrambled eggs morally disgusting! Sheeeeesh. And it's NOT my view that it's bad to "allow more people to vote" - but there are some COMMON SENSE factors - like age - that even YOUR country enforces.

I also note you ignored the no taxation without representation question.
No, didn't ignore it - I overlooked it, but subsequently answered it BEFORE you pointed it out.

                      That's precious.

It says 'Refrigerate after opening' - but it's so thick when refrigerated it doesn't pour well. I added a little bit of vinegar, which fixed that.

If you remove the age requirement like you want that means that even infants have the right to vote. The same group you don't even think have a right to live, what with your supporting the "right" of parents to kill children who are a couple months old.
