  • Michael Cohen Secretly Taped Trump

    Where will this lead?

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump's longtime lawyer, Michael Cohen, secretly recorded a conversation with Trump two months before the presidential election in which they discussed payments to a former Playboy model who said she had an affair with Trump, according to lawyers and others familiar with the recording.

The FBI seized the recording this year during a raid on Cohen's office. The Justice Department is investigating Cohen's involvement in paying women to tamp down embarrassing news stories about Trump before the 2016 election. Prosecutors want to know whether that violated federal campaign finance laws, and any conversation with Trump about those payments would be of keen interest to them.

The recording's existence further draws Trump into questions about tactics he and his associates used to keep aspects of his personal and business life a secret. And it highlights the potential legal and political danger that Cohen represents to Trump. Once the keeper of many of Trump's secrets, Cohen is now seen as increasingly willing to consider cooperating with prosecutors.

This particular news item will lead nowhere because the Republican base have shown they're quite happy with Trump paying off mistresses. Possibly the one where he payed a playboy model to have an abortion will cause a brief stir when it comes out, but my guess is that the cultists will rationalize it as "it was totally before he 'became a Christian' so he gets a mulligan. MAGA!" Be interesting to see if Cohen's got copies of behind-the-scenes tapes from The Apprentice where Trump calls black people the N-word, as that might mix things up, but from the rumors, Mark Burnett is holding onto those pretty tightly.

And anyway, it will all be declared Obama's fault for failing to stop Trump doing these things.

No where. What Trump did wasn't illegal.

Cohen, on the other hand, just showed what a scumbag he really is, although now he's claiming the recordings are protected by attorney-client privileges.

That’s rich. How many mistresses did JFK and Clinton have and how much did they work to keep them silent?

It may lead somewhere. We have already seen the cult refrain from saying anything on the moral issue of this. The salt has lost its' savor in this case also. And we may see a lot more from our friend, Cohen. And you will probably all accept and excuse it. Obama or someone else also did it is what we will be told. Salt...

Can't have been a huge shock to Trump. He's thin on ethics himself, and had to know Cohen was also, and probably retained him BECAUSE of that.

That is a very strong salt of the earth reply. If others did it its ok. Sometimes you might want to consider what values you undermine when defending a person or his behaviour.

It also implies that Republican supporters consider the acceptable standard of behavior for their President to be the worst deeds of every past president combined.

LBJ was fond of bragging that he had more women by accident than JFK did on purpose. One of his biographies (IIRC, The Years of Lyndon Johnson) related how, while Senate Majority Leader, women staffers were warned never to get on an elevator with him in that he'd stop it and start groping them usually lifting their skirt and sticking his hand in their panties. Jan Jarboe Russell, who interviewed Lady Bird Johnson for a biography (Lady Bird: A Biography of Mrs. Johnson) said that "What would be sexual harassment today was part of the everyday atmosphere of Johnson's office."

I'd wish I had used that expression. Very good point.

Nobody is excusing Trump's infidelity. I only said that what he did wasn't illegal.

As for Obama, one of his (very few) admirable qualities is that he seemed, at least by appearances, to be a devoted husband and father.
