Poodles are not dogs. I used to have one as a kid. I know.

My mother had a toy poodle when I was a young'un. Not my favorite type of dog. But he earned his keep shortly after he learned how to bark.

He slept out in the kitchen except when my dad was out of town (usually about twice a year) my mom let him sleep on the floor in their bedroom. One night he woke her up barking up a storm and when she turned on the light she saw that he was bouncing around a rattlesnake that had somehow got in the house and was coiled up in the middle of the room. Mom was terrified of snakes and I mean TERRIFIED.

Fortunately her scream woke everyone up and my grand mother (her mom who moved in shortly before I was born) was of much sterner stuff and after hustling my brother and I back to our room, killed it with a hoe.

After that night the dog was not only allowed to sleep in the bedroom but on the bed as well. As I said, he earned his keep.

I'm always still in trouble again

Poodles are hunting dogs. It's not their fault people give them freaky haircuts.

The haircuts were originally designed for practicality. They were originally a water retriever but their fur gets heavy when wet so much of it was cut off so they could stay afloat better without exhausting themselves. Certain areas were left long to help keep important areas warm.

A real dog would have killed the snake.

He was still a puppy and probably not 3 lbs. Later he grew up (if you can say that a Toy Poodle "grows") into an Alpha male. He would take on Collies and even German Shepherds darting underneath and snapping at their dangly bits. The much larger dog would do a panicked dance and run away. His girlfriend was a full sized Irish Setter who would come looking for him and lie down to um, "accommodate" him.

He was never my favorite dog but I had to give him props.
