    The mounting bureaucracy

This “bottleneck effect” doesn’t usually sour grads on staying the course, Fowler finds, but he does see plenty of doctors in the later stages of their careers hang up their stethoscopes earlier than expected. Some cite electronic health records (EHRs) as part of the reason — especially old school doctors who don’t pride themselves on their computer skills. New research by Stanford Medicine, conducted by The Harris Poll, found that 59 percent think EHRs "need a complete overhaul;" while 40 percent see "more challenges with EHRs than benefits."

Maybe I'm just being dumb, but why wouldn't you use gloves? Doesn't that help prevent the spread of disease and is basically all-upside?

He did say grandfather, so I’d figure he was trained before disposable gloves were in common use across medical professions. Which hasn’t really been all that long really.

Except that what people want, just like you, is Affordable Health Care, not necessarily free health care.

Yup. And the concern which prompted the mandate was AIDS.

I expected it was from a while ago, I'm just confused as to why someone, particularly a doctor, wouldn't be willing to do something so minor to help avoid spreading sicknesses.

I had a couple of guys in my church back then who got the brilliant idea to rent a warehouse, and purchase tons and tons of disposable surgical gloves (are there any other kind? :smile) hoping the price would increase, and they'd get filthy rich due to AIDS.

They ended up with a warehouse full of gloves they couldn't really sell.

Have you ever worn disposable gloves for an extended period? It takes some getting used to. I'm sure he was diligent in washing his hands between patients, and that's generally sufficient (even AIDS takes swapping of bodily fluids to transmit).

Socialized healthcare is not "free." It's simply paid for by taxes instead of premiums.

I am a fan of free and good healthcare for everyone.

If you have a poke through this detailed analysis of the healthcare systems of 11 advanced countries, you'll see that countries where healthcare is socialized through taxes and free at point of use (e.g. UK, Aus, NZ) rank as having some of the best healthcare in the world (#1, #2, #4), while the US is the worst-ranked of the 11 countries.

right. nothing is actually free, that is why I put it in scare quotes. But Jimmy is trying to qualify it further and say just "affordable" - which is not what people want when they talk about socialized medical, they want it to not cost them anything at the doctor's or hospital. They want the taxes to cover it all. Like in New Zealand.

In other words, they want me to pay for their healthcare.
