It would actually be reasonable for a centrist to want a divided government - that way, anything which actually passes is likely to be fairly centrist.

Not even Mad King George was balanced then.

          • balanced usually means nothing gets done. So according to that definition we are balanced now.

Of course I am. The government is badly skewed to the right, so rebalancing is something I am going to be in favor of. I was not online (on TWeb) in 2008, but I was cheering then for the Republicans to take at least one house of Congress, for exactly the same reason. My leftist friends asked me the same question in reverse (why was I cheering Republicans as a moderate/centrist?).

I suspect we are going to see a significant over-correction. I would be happier to see the Executive and Senate in Dem hands in 2020 and the house in Rep hands, but I suspect all three will go Dem and I'll be back to cheering on the Reps for 2022.

Yes... given the badly gerrymandered states, a blue wave is about what it will take. I also would like to see the buffoon in the White House get a solid message about what "the rest of the country" wants. Maybe it'll wake him up that there is actually more than one party in the U.S. Doubtful - but one can always hope.

It does mean things move more slowly - true.

But we are nowhere near balanced. If Kavanaugh is cleared, which seems likely, Reps will have a rare quadfecta at the federal level (Executive, Judicial, and both houses of the legislative). Add to that 25 trifectas at the state level to Dems 8, and we are BADLY skewed to the right.

I think we could probably come up with a list of contributing factors that transcend any one person...

I think so. The current accusation stems from High School. It is uncorroborated (as far as I know), and the timing is a little suspicious to me. There is no other scent of impropriety related to this man, as far as I can see. I am not a fan of how it is going to skew the court and I think the Senate Republicans are being massively disingenuous not to apply the same "let the people have their say" argument they made for Garland, but I can find no reason not to approve this man on the basis of his credentials. Republicans are fairly tight on this, and there are a few Democrats who cannot afford to vote against him or they will jeopardize their re-election prospects. I expect him to be confirmed.

You, apparently, have more confidence in the Republicans on this than I do. So many times, they're a bunch of gutless weenies and will cave at the drop of a hat. I would not be surprised if this delayed the vote to allow for "hearings", and this got pushed past the midterms.
