Maybe he wants Sessions to resign?

I was happy when Sessions was given the job, but he has been an utter disappointment. I'm not sure why Trump doesn't just fire him and appointment someone, other than the complication of getting the new appointee past Congress.

That, and it would start a whole 'nuther round of "obstruction of justice!!!"

          Why does he disappoint you?

Trump seems to manage to go for people who will disappoint.

Sessions has to stand his ground. He is your last defence against the Disunited Banana Republic of America.

My brethren, do not hold your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ with an attitude of personal favoritism. James 2:1

If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not  bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man’s religion is worthless James 1:26

This you know, my beloved brethren. But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger; James 1:19

Despite Trump's The Apprentice character and fame of saying "you're fired!", for some reason the man himself seems to have an almost pathological aversion to actually firing people. Trump hates actually firing people and instead almost always opts for making life really miserable for them in the hope that they'll resign or he gets someone else to fire them.

With regard to Sessions in particular, Trump now obviously (rightly) believes that firing Sessions will look like "Obstruction of Justice" with regard to the Mueller probe. Trump got massive blow-back for firing Comey, and if he fires Sessions that will look like he's going after Mueller. Republican leadership will have told him in no uncertain terms that he is not allowed to fire Sessions. So instead he's falling back on his tried-and-true method that he favors anyway of trying to make the person's life as miserable as possible in the hope they will resign.

As Trump has made clear a number of times in public, he misunderstands the Attorney General position as being about a personal lawyer who protects the President, and he is really angry that Sessions has not been sufficiently loyal to him personally and sufficiently protective of his presidency (especially with regard to Russia investigation issues and Mueller), and he's particularly angry that Sessions recused himself from the Russia investigation.

I think it's the businessman in him. Back in the mid 1980s after he saved Chrysler there was a lot of talk about Lee Iacocca running for president. He nixed the idea saying it would be too difficult for him to acclimate from being the boss who tells folks what to do to having to persuade people to do what he wanted. Trump still has that problem.

I'm always still in trouble again

Yep... as I've said before, I really think Trump had the expectation that after he won the election, people would fall in line behind him and say, "What now, boss?"

The conventional wisdom is that Trump doesn't fire Mr Magoo (Trump's typically charming epithet for Sessions) because any nominated replacement would have a hard time at the confirmation hearings. While Trump can make an interim appointment if Sessions resigns (which he's clearly not going to do), it is less clear he can do so if Sessions is fired.
