  • Speaking of conspiracy theories

Google search is 'Rigged' I tell ya, 'Rigged'.

    What a nutcase.

    https://money.cnn.com/2018/08/28/tec...ged/index.html

So The Conspiracy Theorist in Chief has now come out and said that Google search is rigged because it mostly points to bad news articles about him.

This can't be legal he says, and gosh darn it, he's going to do something about it!

So now our dictator wanna be doesn't like the fact that a search engine designed around statistical parameters that algorithmically determine what are the most commonly searched for or read hits to a give random search criteria tends to pull up bad news about him. And so it 'must be rigged' and he's going to see if he can force them to 'comply' and not do that.

Hmm, discounting the fact he couldn't understand how a google search algorithm works if you gave him 10 years to try to figure it out, there is nothing going on here that relates to google. It's like saying the fact a search on Superhero movies turns up more hits are Marvel Movies than DC movies means google search is rigged.

But what IS scary is he wants to try to punish google, to 'make it illegal'. Once again showing his 'Dictator wanna be' motivations and his complete lack of understanding of what are the standards, morals, and driving philosophies that made this nation the great nation it is.

Its hard to know how much of it is Google and how much of it are internet savvy people rigging Google searches by gaming the system. I seem to recall 4chan and r/The_Donald managed to pull Google towards favorable results during the election, and making most Google searches of Hillary look rather negative.

      U.S. News & World Report in 2016:
      Source: The New Censorship

GOOGLE, INC., ISN'T just the world's biggest purveyor of information; it is also the world's biggest censor.

The company maintains at least nine different blacklists that impact our lives, generally without input or authority from any outside advisory group, industry association or government agency. Google is not the only company suppressing content on the internet. Reddit has frequently been accused of banning postings on specific topics, and a recent report suggests that Facebook has been deleting conservative news stories from its newsfeed, a practice that might have a significant effect on public opinion – even on voting. Google, though, is currently the biggest bully on the block.

Do you miss the subreddit dedicated to sharing celebrity nudes that much? Or the one dedicated to men who cheered when shooters killed women? Or how about the subreddit that occasionally had pedophilia content? Or how about the subreddit that organised bullying on gaming journalists - oh wait they brought that one back... etc...

Most of the subreddits have their own mods. Basically if you start a subreddit, you have god powers over it. You can ban who you want, delete posts you want.

I noticed during the 2015 presidential campaign that stories favorable to Trump and critical of Hillary were becoming increasingly hard to find on Google, not to mention older stories critical of liberal policies and ideologies in general had all but disappeared from the search engine. That's when I started using Duck Duck Go.

Shrill over reaction ... That would be Trump - yes that would.

But, once again, I can count on you to defend Trumps actual immersment in conspiracy theories like QAnon and this while at the same time discount the clear evidence Trump sought help in the election from the Russians. The Conspiracy Theorist in Chief and his faithful are unmoved from their tin foil hat perch.

I targeted that one because I have a feeling its part of a larger pattern. Most of the things that have been banned have been atrocious. Racists advocating very blatent white supremacy, various porn rings, places that advocated violence and so forth.

The problem is that if conservatives had to include those examples I don't think the sympathy would be there for their case that the crackdown is universally bad.

And you guys have entirely ignored that left-wingers have had our channels shut down as well, by alt-right trolls from 4chan, who manage to abuse the report functions on Youtube, spamming the Youtube algorithms with claims that a channel is full of copyrighted material, or porn. It can take a week or more for those channels to get back or get monetised again.

Perhaps you should read the entire article before commenting, Leonhard. Also, note that we have something called "freedom of speech" over here; there's a danger in silencing speech which is deemed "bad" when "bad" is ill-defined or defined in a partisan way.

I have to be honest I can't. Most US websites don't obey the GDPR rules, so I can't withdraw my consent for tracking, so I use a VPN. But they wanna track me, so they block the VPN tunnels. So I don't read it.

If there is a problem of censorship that is becoming increasingly partisan, that is a problem. I wouldn't want it the other way One Bad Pig. I have experienced it though, without seeing Fox News or Breitbart having any outcry about freedom of speech being denied. So I'm a little jaded about conservatives talking about Free Speech, since they mostly mean their speech.

And some things are politically biased because reality is sometimes politically biased. For instance if there's a crackdown on websites that peddle bad health information on Youtube, by Youtube, selling quack cures etc... then it might likely affect one political party more than another. But I think Youtube has the freedom to do it in the name of making their search feature more useful. Without that meaning that they're politically biased.

As for censorship, I want to see some clear cut cases of ordinary conservatives, who aren't arguing bigoted white supremacy, or advocating for violence, in a large proportion among those who have been banned before I start becoming more concerned.

Right now I'm honestly more in a 'too little, too soon' state of mind about it.

I've already mentioned it many times. You just dismiss it OBP. I don't really see the point in going over it again. To you the fact Trump Jr wanted to set up a back channel to Putin means nothing. To you the fact Trump called out to Russia for help with the Hillary emails and they responded means nothing. To you the fact that Trump is constantly in bed with Oligarchs and money launderers means nothing. To you the fact that Trump's campaign staff met with a Russian operative to get dirt on Hillary means nothing. The fact that Trump consistently 'believes' the words of Putin over our own intelligence community as to whether or not Russia tried to influence the election in Trumps favor means nothing. The fact that so many of Trumps campaign officials and even appointees (Flynn) have been convicted of crimes and face some the serious jail time means nothing. It just goes on and on OBP. Nothing trump does that is wrong, evil, shady, offensive, unpatriotic, treasonous in spirit means anything to you. You dismiss it all.

I have had no problem finding positive articles on Trump. The bias that exists in google is that it tries to bring results to you in order of popularity of the result for the search. So what is popular is what shows up first ... which incidentally doesn't really bode well for Trump.

You're an ignorant prig, Jim. I wasn't the only one who noticed. Google's autocomplete during the 2015 election had a strange habit of suggesting unintuitive results that were favorable to Hillary compared to the suggestions offered by competing search engines. What a coincidence! A study published in 2015 found that Google manipulated its search results to hurt competitors. And in 2017, Google was fined by the EU to the tune of $2.7 billion for rigging search results to favor its own products over that of the competition.

Oh, but I'm sure they're on the up-and-up when it comes to President Trump. Yes siree... no manipulation here. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.
