Eh, I regreted the wording and dialed it back (even before reading your post - you posted while I was editing). Didn't seem right. Just because Mountain Man and Sparko calls liberals racists for caring about racism against black people doesn't make it right for me to call them racist.

What's this? Chuck actually posts something substantive and reasonable?

        That deserves an "amen".

See Chuck's post above. DeSantis was clearly referring to ideas and not people. He has absolutely nothing to feel ashamed about.

It does make it look softer. In which case it is clearly a peccadillo. Still, he deserved a slap on the wrist. It was funny to see you guys outraged though.

You never have heard it, because it's not a saying. The phrase is "muck this up" not "monkey this up" and DeSantis knew exactly what he was doing and who the audience was that he was speaking to on Fox News.

One thing I will say, extending an olive branch here, it was clearly wrong for newspapers to report the quote in the titles as "'Monkey this up' by electing Andrew Gillum" That was a lot worse, and clearly most of the reactions are against that version. If they had gone with the version Chuck reported, the outrage would have been much less.

I was just about to go to sleep when I read this but I am afraid your amen will cost me all my sleep :-) Thanks though. These were actually the points I challenged you to make at an earlier point in the thread.

I suspect the phrases "monkey around" and "mess this up" collided in his brain producing the unusual statement. I've had similar experiences, especially if I'm nervous. It's absurd to suggest that it's even accidentally racist and that DeSantis needs to be publicly shamed for it.

About the Jewish candidate: we'll all be in a hot oven if he's elected.
About the female candidate: elect her and we'll have a crisis every month.
About the Mexican candidate: he's a novice, and still wet back behind the ears.
About the Japanese candidate: he eyes the budget with a unique slant
About the black candidate: he'll just monkey things up

Each and every one can be interpreted as "racist" or as "really, really sloppy and stupid choice of words." I lean to the latter. It goes up there with "deplorables" and "the 47% who pay no taxes" comment. I doubt the man is a racist. I think he is pretty obtuse, or very sloppy, to use a term that is a historical derogatory slur for a black person ("monkey"). It derives from "porch monkey," a derogatory term used to refer to black people who gathered on their porches at the end of the work day. If you are black, or have a black child, you know this term.
The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy...returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Martin Luther King

If you had followed the conversation, you would have seen that DeSantis was referring to political ideologies and not any particular person. To try and connect his use of the word "monkey" to the deliberately derogatory "porch monkey" is as big a stretch as claiming that our country wasn't divided during the Civil War because the Union loyalists who stayed in Washington instead of fleeing south tended to agree on political issues.

Sorry, referring to black people as monkeys is as old as it gets, AND right now it is one of the more common ways for racists to signal their allegiance to this ideas whike still maintaining some potential for plausible deniability.

When I saw that quote I had the same reaction as the person in seers link. As far as I'm concerned, desantist just signalled every racist in florida that he wants them to help him keep this black man out of office.

So Democrats think of blacks as monkeys.

                                This is nothing new.
