  • Blue Collar Harris Poll...

    Yeah boy...

A new survey, conducted by the Harris Poll, found that 85 percent of blue-collar workers said their lives are advancing in "the right direction." The survey, commissioned by Express Employment Professionals, took place between July 9 and July 23. Data were collected from 1,049 blue-collar workers from across the nation who are employed in professions requiring manual labor.

Across the board, the results indicate America's blue-collar workforce is sanguine about the nation's current economic outlook and their own standing. Apart from the 85 percent of blue-collar Americans who said their lives are going in the right direction, 69 percent said their local communities are on the right path, and 58 percent view their states as being on a positive course.

The poll found 51 percent of blue-collar workers believe the country is heading in the right direction, a figure 12-percentage points higher than the 39 percent recorded amongst all Americans in a similar July Harvard-Harris Poll.

Overall, 55 percent of blue-collar Americans expressed they were better off today compared with five years ago.

Not only are blue-collar workers bullish about their current economic situation, they are also upbeat about the future. The survey found that 80 percent of blue-collar workers are optimistic about the future, with over one-third stating they were "very optimistic."

Among those with children, 88 percent of respondents indicated they believed their children were likely to attain a better future. This stands in stark contrast to data collected by the Pew Research Center in 2017, which showed only 37 percent of Americans believing their children would grow up to be better off financially.

I wonder why they are optimistic? I don't really see all that much to be optimistic about in the various economic numbers.

Is this just a "we believe in Trump!" thing?

You believe 85 percent of blue-collar workers think that? Perhaps like my friends in manufacturing and construction they just see more work coming their way. The company I work for is seeing ten year highs in orders.

The lowering of the corporate tax rate has resulted in a major stimulus to the economy with companies investing and expanding. The upshot of this is many of them aren't telling their employees they'll need to cut hours for a month or so during certain times of the year as we've seen for most of the last decade but rather who wants overtime.

Well that's great and I hope it continues.

Personally I'm pretty pessimistic about the economic outlook and I see another global financial crisis on the horizon, but I sincerely hope I'm wrong.

It is best to drop the prostration in sarcasm, but yes, the trends in the economy and unemployment of the 8 years of Obama continue today.

Most of the credit should growth the companies and labor since the last recession, and neither Obama nor Trump can claim the credit. I have not heard Obama directly claim he is responsible for the recovery alone..

The current economic recovery is in a direct line from the recovery initiated by Obama after the 2008 Financial Crash. OTOH Trump is virtually guaranteeing a future crash because the U.S. Deficit is now out of control thanks to Trump, and the U.S. is moving toward record-breaking debt. The nation’s fiscal outlook looks bleak and this will largely impact blue collar workers not the 1%.

Considering the numbers this includes a whole lot of folks that didn't vote for him. They see that business is improving which means things like unemployment dropping to record lows (especially among minorities), increases in pay[1], bonuses, being offered more hours including overtime, job security, and more jobs available (both for skilled and unskilled) than there are people to fill them -- meaning the ability to get better jobs.

1 Still slow in coming being traditionally about the last thing to improve in a booming economy

Funny how the left never cares about debt when they are in power and spending money like the proverbial drunken sailor like on so-called "shovel ready jobs" that Obama later laughingly admitted didn't actually exist.

Funny how all the things that I mentioned in the post above really only started taking place after Trump won the election.
