That's why I keep asking those who declare that they believe her story which version of it do they believe.

Republican "hostility" toward "women"? Care to provide 3 good examples?

      • I'm curious guys, the country is split 50% - 50% Republicans and Democrats, yet you want the Supreme Court to be mostly Republican? Doesn't that strike you as odd?

No offense, but that's a silly question. No partisan on either side actually wants an evenly split Congress. They want a majority.

But since your Supreme Court effectively acts like a second government, it does seem politically weird to stuff it full of people that don't represent the people.

My point is that it's one branch of government, as is the legislative. Would you apply the same logic to the legislative branch?

I've always found it ironic that the folks who talk about such things as a War on Women and "Republican hostility to women" are the same ones who strive to allow sexually deviant males into the women's bathrooms with young girls.

Funny how when the SCOTUS and most of the judiciary tilted to the left that those who voice this concern now were so silent back then.

Personally I want justices who follow the rule of law and are strict constitutionalists. The fact is that the left has mostly abandoned that ideal.

I didn't even know enough about politics back then to have any idea of it. If I did I'd have been against it back then as well. Honestly I thought your Supreme Court consisted of dozens of judges, largely split evenly between parties.

A SCOTUS comprised of 11 justices is not unconstitutional, as the number of justices is not spelled out. We've had more than 9 and we've had less than 9.
An endless game, that. If the Dems do it - then the Reps will next time they have the office - and we'll eventually have more people on the court than we have citizens

Oh... and apparently McConnell was explicitly asked if he would defer any SCOTUS nominee named in 2020 until after the fall election, and he has (surprise surprise) declined to do so.

I find hypocrites tedious and irritating.

To be fair, you are not the only one who has suddenly expressed this. I've seen some pundits on TV, some of whom have been active for a number of decades, all of a sudden start voicing this concern, coincidentally starting right after Trump was elected. In fact a couple of them were positively giddy when the Democrats had a lock on both the presidency but Congress as well (a large majority in the House and a veto-proof majority in the Senate) for a couple years after Obama was elected. No talk of a need for balance then.

Why would I do that? The sentence did not say "Republican hostility towards women," it said "Republican hostility towards women who come forward to report sexual assault." The comment was also specifically made in the context of a discussion about the Kavanaugh hearings - so those were the Republicans being referenced. As for examples, we need only look at Trump's comments about "dangerous times for men" and his mocking of Ford, as well as Hatch's suggestion that the women who approached him at the elevator about the issue "grow up." Flake was the one person (AFAIK) who listened when he was approached, and pressured for an investigation.

More generally - Ford has been receiving death threats since she came forward. Somehow, I don't think those are coming from liberals or Democrats.

In the 1930s, Franklin D. Roosevelt proposed a bill to expand the Supreme Court beyond nine justices because he was tired of them striking down his legislation. (Obviously this did not pass, and indeed it proved to be an unpopular proposal.)
