        Yes and no. The Chinese government owns large stakes in most of its companies and props them up and themselves as well as using them to acquire western technology. They likely did this because they figured out the USSR fell mainly due to losing the economic and technological race to the west and vowed not to do the same.

            No, you tend to associate 'socialism' solely with Communism when if fact there are various form of Socialism, e.g. the prosperous Scandinavian countries tend towards Socialism and Australia has a form of Democratic Socialism with such benefits as universal health care and subsidised tertiary education.

              I do know what socialism is. It is when the government/state controls the means of production, the jobs, and the distribution of goods while calling itself "the people" or "proletariat" -- pretty simple.

                Democratic Socialism isn't actual socialism, it is a capitalist society with socialized programs. The USA would qualify as Socialism under your definition. We have social security, and healthcare (Medicare, Medicaid), and welfare programs.
