So it seems like what happened is that Trump's allies have been leaking to the media that "Rosenstein Is Totally Going to Resign" in an effort to pressure Rosenstein to resign.

Rosenstein, however, isn't cooperating with the strategy and isn't resigning.

    So, Fake News.

The reason it's important for Trump to pressure Rosenstein to resign, rather than simply firing him, is because it affects how his replacement is appointed. If he resigns, Trump can quickly appoint a replacement. If he's fired, the replacement process is (probably) subject to things like senate-approval, and the act of firing him would probably also be interpreted as obstruction of justice by the courts.

First of all, they weren't the only ones to report it. Secondly, they updated the article to reflect new information.

Nor even close to the first. It appears that Axios (which is usually regarded as center-left) was the first to claim he was going to be fired. The a little later the Washington Post (which only someone as far left as starlight could regard as being right wing) said their sources in the White House informed them that Rosenstein resigned. The feeding frenzy proceeded from there in spite of the fact that was a previously scheduled meeting (public knowledge) and Trump was out of town (again public knowledge).

IOW, this was once again a manufactured news story from the left that others picked up on.

Interesting analysis of the Rosenstein situation. Apparently part of the confusion in the media is that Rosenstein actually did attempt to resign multiple times, so that wasn'tt fake news, but Trump won't let him off that easy.

This would certainly explain Trump's confidence that his administration is in clear as far as Russia is concerned and that it's the Democrats who need to look over their shoulders.

The theory that Rosenstein has flipped on his liberal friends in order to save himself has been floating about for several months now.

According to reports, Rosey tried to resign at least 5 different times and was rebuffed every time. What's a rat to do when he can't flee the sinking ship?

Answer: Drag the other rats down with him.
