  • Ted Cruz forced from restaurant amid Kavanaugh drama

    Source: https://www.cnn.com/2018/09/25/politics/ted-cruz-heckled-restaurant-brett-kavanaugh/index.html

Washington (CNN)Sen. Ted Cruz was forced to leave a Washington restaurant Monday after left-wing activists swarmed the senator, heckling him with chants and demanding to know his position on embattled Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

In two videos posted to Twitter, a small group of activists can be seen confronting the Texas Republican and his wife, Heidi, as the couple makes their way to a table at Fiola, an Italian restaurant near the Capitol building.

The first video shows a woman who identities herself as a constituent of the Texas Republican and a survivor of sexual assault questioning him about his vote on the controversial nominee.

"I'd love to talk with you about Brett Kavanaugh tonight," she says. "I'm a constituent. Love to know what your vote is going to be tonight. I know that you're very close friends with Mr. Kavanaugh. And do you believe survivors, sir?"

The group then begins chanting, "We believe survivors!" as Cruz and his wife walk away from them and toward their table.

After receiving a "God bless you" from Cruz, the woman then says to the senator: "There are now three people who have come forward and who have said that Brett Kavanaugh has attacked them. I know that you're close friends with him. Did you talk to him about that? Did you talk to him about his position?"

As the protesters surround Cruz's table begin chanting more vigorously, the senator and his wife gather their belongings and walk out of the restaurant to cheers, according to the second video.
On Tuesday, Democratic Rep. Beto O'Rourke, who is currently competing for Cruz's Senate seat, came to his opponent's defense.

"Not right that Senator Cruz and his wife Heidi were surrounded and forced to leave a restaurant last night because of protesters," he said in a tweet. "The Cruz family should be treated with respect."

I'm just as much against activists doing stunts like this, as I am pro-life activists following the abortion doctors and heckling them at their homes and on the streets.

And us pro-life folks will quickly, loudly, and unapologetically denounce those hecklers.

On the other hand, we have a real jewel of the Democratic Party preaching....

Waters finished with a call to action: "If you see anybody from that cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd. You push back on them. Tell them they’re not welcome anymore, anywhere!"

That comes awfully close to inciting a riot, and is exactly what happened to Cruz and his wife.

Not that I expected any less of you Cow Poke, you're a gentleman.

Really its just uncivilised to do something like that. Protests have a time and a place, and I think politicians have a right not to be harrassed. Same as any body.

Yeah I'm not fond of that stuff. There are ways of showing public disaproval. And there are creative protests that I don't mind, which other find to be going over the time. But hounding individuals on their own? That doesn't fly with me.

Also the last thing US liberals want is for conservatives to start fighting back like that.

It would get really ugly really fast if it became a normalised part of the public discourse.

So are you guys against the First Amendment now?

A one-off, non-violent, free speech, protest, of a democratic politician, by the people, in a public venue, upsets you? That's pretty pathetic snowflakism.

What could possibly be more foundationally democratic and in line with American values, than a public protest against a politician? This is what your country is supposed to be all about.

Perhaps it's your insane dramaqueenery that causes you to miss the distinction between not liking something, and "being upset". Dial the drama down a bit, take a deep breath, and all will be well.

They have the right to act like a bunch of jackasses and harass even the wife of one of the politicians, and I have the right to call them jackasses.

Why does that upset you so, little snowflake?

The First Amendment states that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." In other words, it applies only to the government, and is not a prohibition on any kind of censorship or speech restriction that is not from the government. As no one in this topic so far has advocated that congress pass some law making their actions illegal, this question of yours makes absolutely no sense.

I believe this behavior is the actions of a few with most anti abortionists condemning such behavior. The actions seen in this case are being encouraged by liberal leaders.
