I don't know, it looks like a bad call to claim heritage and part of a minorities issues. Yawn. Its as bad as those Red Skins fans who claim their stupid mascot and football isn't culturally insensitive, because their great great grandfather's nephew (thrice removed) once had relations with Native American.

I think it's more of a case that multiple polls show that something like 10% of Native Americans are offended by sports teams with names like "Indians," "Chiefs," "Apaches," "Seminoles" etc. while another 10% actually like them and 80% really don't care.

Generally it's a whole lotta white liberals who angrily insist that Native Americans need to be upset and a very small percentage of them that are that causes all the fuss.

There is no fixed value. 1/32 is the minimum required to claim native American status and is a little over 3%. I have that but I've never claimed it. But I know my family tree. A DNA test is going to show how much of that DNA made it into her unique person, it can't prove exactly how recent that ancestor was. It shows she isn't 'making it up', but it also shows the ancestor is earlier than her great-great grandma or grandpa.
In fact, at less than 1.6% Indian DNA at the very most, Warren is whiter than the average white American and has no business identifying herself as "American Indian". That she thinks she has somehow been vindicated is absurd. There's not a tribe in America that would claim her as one of their own.

A couple pertinent posts I made back in early 2015:

Take for instance the Ottawa University Braves out in Kansas. They were pressured to drop the name "Braves" as it was deemed racially insensitive. But what those behind the push apparently didn't realize is that the school has deep historic ties with the Ottawa Indians, who in 1865 gave a land grant of 20,000 acres to establish a University on the Prairie. The Ottawa Tribe is adamantly in support of keeping the name "Braves" for the University and has repeatedly expressed this support through the years. They recognize that the nickname is not an insult but is a positive symbol of bravery, heroism and strength.

Similarly, a few years ago the Florida State Seminoles were being pressured to change their name until the Seminole Indians expressed overwhelming support of the team name and said they were proud of the association. In fact the support was so overwhelming that the NCAA was forced to issue them an exemption from their prohibition against using "hostile and abusive" Indian mascots and names.

In 2002 the National Athletics Association’s Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee ordered the University of North Carolina-Pembroke to explain why it was still using the "racially offensive" logo of an American Indian and the "Braves" nickname for its athletic teams. What they discovered was that the College was founded by the Lumbee Indians (the largest Native American tribe east of the Mississippi) and was for many years the only 4-year university for Native Americans. Lumbee Tribal Chairman Milton R. Hunt who said that he was "surprised by the letter," responded: "the Lumbees don't want the NCAA to meddle with this." He also said that the "Lumbees would consider it an insult if it [the logo and nickname] were changed." The tribe remains closely tied with the university with members as chancellors, board members, staff members, as well as students.

One that is bowing to the pressure is the University of North Dakota who was forced to drop the name the Fighting Sioux. Why the Fighting Sioux is offensive but the Fighting Irish (Notre Dame's mascot) is not remains a mystery. There are two Sioux reservations in North Dakota -- the Spirit Lake Reservation and the Standing Rock Indian Reservation (which stretches into South Dakota). The Sioux at the former voted by a 2-to-1 majority that the name was not offensive and was completely acceptable. Those at the other reservation have never voted on the matter although it has been noted that it is not uncommon to see folks at both locations wearing UND clothing with the logo prominently displayed. Still the NCAA has successfully coerced UND into the name change which should take effect later this year.
UND is now the Fighting Hawks.

The school claims that the name and its connections help educate their students about American Indians. Each year, students travel to the White Mountain Apache Indian Reservation to participate in parades and tribal culture. In exchange Apache dancers come to Arcadia and students hold fundraisers for tribal causes. The principle of Arcadia High at the time, Martin Plourde, points out that this provided an "unbelievable connection for our kids to be able to visit the reservation and see that the Apaches are not a people of the ‘Broken Arrow’ era, that they are a current modern day people and they struggle just like a lot of people struggle.”

A quick check shows that they have been able to resist efforts from the state of California to change their name.

The Cherokee Nation's statement on the subject is relevant, I think.

Source: Cherokee Nation Secretary of State

"A DNA test is useless to determine tribal citizenship. Current DNA tests do not even distinguish whether a person’s ancestors were indigenous to North or South America," Cherokee Nation Secretary of State Chuck Hoskin Jr. said. "Sovereign tribal nations set their own legal requirements for citizenship, and while DNA tests can be used to determine lineage, such as paternity to an individual, it is not evidence for tribal affiliation. Using a DNA test to lay claim to any connection to the Cherokee Nation or any tribal nation, even vaguely, is inappropriate and wrong. It makes a mockery out of DNA tests and its legitimate uses while also dishonoring legitimate tribal governments and their citizens, whose ancestors are well documented and whose heritage is proven. Senator Warren is undermining tribal interests with her continued claims of tribal heritage."

One difference between the terms you list here and Redskins is that Indians, Chiefs, Apaches, and Seminoles are all, in and of themselves, neutral terms. No one really cares if you use those terms generally (outside of maybe the people who insist you use "Native American" rather than "Indian" I suppose). Redskin, however, is an outright pejorative.

That said, and admittedly speaking as a non-Native American, I don't really have much of an issue with the team names outside of perhaps Redskins. Chief Wahoo really should be retired completely, though, that's just uncomfortable to look at.

This thread is hilarious. Warren proves her claims of native American decent are true, which many people here and elsewhere had mocked her for. And instead of contrite apologies, the conservative posters' reactions have been the kind that might make a casual reader of the thread think her claims had been disproven rather than proven. The unintentional self-parody from you guys is hilarious.

What she "proved" is that she may have a very distant ancestor that was indigenous to North or even South America and has considerably less native American ancestry than the typical white American does. Calling herself a Native American as she has done in the past -- based largely on her "high cheekbones" (talk about your racial stereotyping) -- and used it to advance her career and profit by it, is not in any way alleviated by this stunt.
