  • New moon: China to launch lunar lighting in outer space...

    What a good idea...

BEIJING: China is planning to launch its own "artificial moon" by 2020 to replace street lamps and lower electricity costs in urban areas, state media reported Friday (Oct 19).

Chengdu, a city in southwestern Sichuan province, is developing "illumination satellites" which will shine in tandem with the real moon, but are eight times brighter, according to China Daily.

The first man-made moon will launch from Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Sichuan, with three more to follow in 2022 if the first test goes well, said Wu Chunfeng, head of Tian Fu New Area Science Society, the organisation responsible for the project.

    sound loony.

The satellites would have to be 22,000 miles from earth to be in a geosynchronous orbit. At that distance the mirrors would have to be pretty enormous to show up as more than a bright speck in the sky.

I think they must have figured most of that out...

of course not. That would be politically incorrect. They just don't always tell the truth.

As all the amateur and professional astronomers within range of the thing let out a collective cry of absolute anguish.

It's virtually impossible to do any useful deep sky astronomy for the 2 weeks from 1st to 3rd quarter as it is. Two orbs that are significantly brighter constantly shining at night?

City street lights already make astronomy in the cities almost impossible.

No more stars at night for the Chinese.

                  Please just say NO!

My brethren, do not hold your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ with an attitude of personal favoritism. James 2:1

If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not  bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man’s religion is worthless James 1:26

This you know, my beloved brethren. But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger; James 1:19

And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.

                    Don't mess with that!
