Yes, following the 23rd amendment to the US constitution. They have (currently) three electoral college votes.

Yep. Democrats have about a 10 to 1 registration advantage there, so it's never remotely a contest; Republicans have never gotten an electoral vote from DC. Even in Reagan's 1984 landslide, Mondale took DC.

Seems like a lot of electoral votes for a single city.

I thought the whole idea of having Washington DC was so we would have a place to house the federal government that was completely uninvolved in influencing the federal government? Like a neutral zone.

Which may explain why the subsequent amendment to give their representatives full voting rights failed - the Republican states didn't ratify it.

IIRC they have a higher population than Wyoming.

That was the idea, yeah. I don't think the founders envisioned that many voters living in the capital itself (much of the initial population was made up of politicians, political appointees, and slaves).

Maybe they should just consider the citizens of DC as Maryland citizens for voting purposes.

Given the land was donated by Maryland, that makes sense (IIRC Virginia gave some too, but it was given back).

So, my polling place was backed up about an hour when I got there at 6:15. LOTS of women voting at my place. Lots of older people too.

One thing that's been largely ignored, what with the House races attracting nearly all the attention and the Senate getting anything left, are the governor's races. It looks likely that the Democrats could make some big gains there.

I did see one guy there trying to vote and he didn't have a valid ID. Apparently his license did not match up with his registered address or something and they made him leave without voting. He did not put up a fuss or anything. I heard them ask him if he had moved recently or something.

Yep, saw that recently. It'll be big, too, with the census coming up and its attendant redistricting. Looks like the "8 year itch" will strike at a bad time for Republicans.

Having a governorship in a state is also a big plus during the presidential election.

Unfortunately our Republican senate candidate is pro-abortion, pro-homosexual marriage and running smear campaigns against his opponent (who is a scumbag). I'll hold my breath and vote for him because of his party. If it weren't a close election, wouldn't bother.
