  • California propositions

I have a few general principles for voting on the propositions.

Pretty much any bond issue is rejected. This is just granting more dedicated money that takes away from taxes being used elsewhere.

Most propositions seem to ask the people to vote for something more liberal or devastating than the laws the liberal state congress has approved. There are a few exceptions where the state is being restricted from doing taxes -- those sometimes work out okay; these propositions can be okay.

Sometimes I have seen a proposition that seemed okay initially, but the details of a legislative proposition usually show either that that proposed law was badly written or that there was ill-intent behind it.

you mean like legalizing pot, same-sex marriage, or trying to secede from the Union?

    California is bonkers.

Any time I see a proposition that claims it will "save" money, I immediately vote against it, because all it really means is that the money will be dumped into some other program. Also, I habitually vote against every levy. Most of them end up passing anyway because there are a lot of retirees in my area who technically don't pay income tax and always vote in favor of them. School levies are the worst, because instead of trimming their expenses to meet the available money, they try to increase the available money to meet the expenses. It's a backwards way of thinking.

I saw that the proposition to split the state has been removed by court order since it was not a legal option.

I had to vote on two proposed constitutional amendments today. One was to force the governor to apply more casino proceeds to schools, and the other was to allow same-day voter registration. Needless to say, I voted no on both (though they'll both probably pass ).

We are having a donnybrook here over Measure Q, a one percent tax to pay for fire services, etc. I think that will be a close call either way.

What in particular is wrong with same-day voter registration? You show up with the right papers in cause you don't have a voter ID, you get the voter ID and you vote.

Seems reasonable doesn't it? I'm not sure what drawbacks would be there.

Not enough time for a proper vetting process.

If something is important to you, you prepare in advance.
