      • This is kinda depressing...

New Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez comes from a poorer background unlike the usual millionaires in congress, and so:

Ocasio-Cortez revealed on Thursday that she will need to wait for her congressional salary to kick in before she can afford to rent an apartment in D.C...

There are three months between her general election victory and when she is sworn in as a congressional member, meaning she will not make a salary for that time period.

Ocasio-Cortez said she saved some money before leaving her job at a restaurant and had planned accordingly with her partner.

“We’re kind of just dealing with the logistics of it day by day, but I’ve really been just kind of squirreling away and then hoping that gets me to January," she told The New York Times in an interview.

And a Fox News panel proceeded to laugh at her for being poor. And also repeated several times the long-discredited and mocked claim that when she'd done a photo-shoot and been provided by the photographer with expensive clothes to wear during her shoot that those clothes were somehow "hers" or owned by her.

Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) tore into Fox News hosts on Friday for "gleefully" cracking jokes about her finances, saying that the hosts' comments revealed what their thoughts about working-class people...

Ocasio-Cortez responded on Twitter, saying it was “very revealing to see how gleefully Fox News hosts crack jokes about working-class people.”

"It is bizarre to see 1%-salaried anchors laugh at the US housing crisis," Ocasio-Cortez added in a second tweet.

For those here who have been (rightfully and reasonably) complaining that there's too many ultra-rich people in congress and not enough representation from working class people, it's depressing to see person from a working class background being mocked by multimillionaires on TV for being poor.

A reminder that 40% of Americans couldn't cover a $400 emergency expense without going into debt and 61% of Americans couldn't cover a $1000 emergency expense without going into debt.

It was an invitation for you to educate me with your superior intellect and superior grasp of world history. Please tell me about those numerous times where weak central governments and strong local governments have worked really well and proven stable over the long term...

            ...
I'm going to go ahead and call "Fake News" on the claim that the hosts were laughing at her "for being poor." I'm also skeptical of her implication that the anchors were all top-one-percenters, but not enough to directly call it "fake."

I suspect the real reason they were laughing at her is the usual reason for laughing at her: She's a dolt. Why couldn't put into effect her own erudite solution for funding Medicare-for-all: "You just pay for it!"

            • Returning to the OP...

I'm intrigued by Levin's "Liberty Amendments":

              Impose Congressional term limits

Repeal the Seventeenth Amendment, returning the election of Senators to state legislatures

Impose term limits for Supreme Court Justices and restrict judicial review

Require a balanced budget and limit federal spending and taxation

Define a deadline to file taxes (one day before the next federal election)

Subject federal departments and bureaucratic regulations to periodic reauthorization and review

Create a more specific definition of the Commerce Clause

              Limit eminent domain powers

Allow states to more easily amend the Constitution by bypassing Congress

Create a process where two-thirds of the states can nullify federal laws

Require photo ID to vote and limit early voting

              From here.

I'm not sure those are my highest priorities, but they are certainly interesting and many would be quite helpful.

              • I think I would also raise the voting age to 25, and reinstitute "literacy tests" in the form of requiring prospective voters to score at least 70% on the standard citizenship test.

If you're going down that route you might as well reinstitute the rule that only property owners can vote.

As I read NR's post, I knew somebody would go down that road.

Personally, I like it. The only problem I can see is your candidate might do something really nutty just before election day, and you've already voted for her.

Which, if you think about it, could happen the day AFTER the election too...

Absolutely not! The ones least likely to "citizenship literate" are the poorest and youngest. In this age of "vote for the home team," there is absolutely no justification for such a test.

Of course, and being that they are politicians, that possibility is pretty high.

The fact is, however, that changing your mind AFTER election day can't change your vote, where as changing your mind PRIOR to election day (if you haven't already voted) can, indeed, change your vote.

I fill out my absentee ballot and my wife drops it off on election day.
