They could have set a policy for all in attendance that each person got X and only X questions, and anyone breaking that rule would be escorted out by security. They could have more than one mike and simply turned his off at the sound system. I can think of several other approaches.
Or they could simply yank Accost-her's press credentials and be done with it.

Sometimes the most direct route really is the best.

yanking his press pass WAS the WH telling CNN to choose another reporter to represent them.

Am I understanding correctly that this revocation of Acosta's pass doesn't apply to CNN as a whole, then?

as far as I can tell. They just revoked HIS pass. There are other CNN reporters in the WH.

I understand the importance of a free press. What you haven't done is show how Trump's actions are in any way a threat to that freedom.
I called them BOTH non-trivial dangers. The problem MM is that you are so biased towards Trump and so biased against Obama that there is no potential for any sort of reasoned discussion of anything Trump does that is wrong or out of scope.

Your responses to the issues I have raised concerning Trump's abuse of the press show that you DON"T understand the importance of the free press, either that or you are willing to compromise that understanding in order to maintain your "support Trump at any cost" policy.

CNN would rather not be forced by the President to put their second tier on the 'front lines' so to speak. And they don't believe they should have to. You guys do realize the flaw with this sort of reasoning is what stumps MBA's when they try to take the factory line management philosophy to managing the top notch personnel at a tech company. All the parts are NOT interchangeable. The super talent making you the industry leader can't be replaced with another guy with the same PhD. You keep them happy, and you stay thankful you have them. When you are using the best you have, it is unlikely the person you replace them with will be as good.

The White House is not responsible for keeping CNN's top tier happy. Access to the WH Press Pool has always been a privilege, not a right.

I was answering why CNN does not just replace Acosta. That should have been obvious. I know why Trump doesn't want Acosta there. And frankly, Acosta did not do anything that would warrant banishment. Reporters push. They do it all the time. That is the culture. If Trump wants to change that, he needs to give fair warning.

The real issue is Trump didn't want to answer Acosta's question and Acosta wouldn't grovel at the king's feet.

as I said above, it was more about Acosta being disrespectful when Trump tried to move on. He had already asked several questions and just kept going on. He then talked over and interrupted Trump as he tried to move to another reporter, then refused to give up the microphone. Acosta was acting like a two-year-old. Trump, being Trump, can't let that go and dressed him down. It wasn't about the question, it was about the disrespect. Trump is a narcissist, he can't stand being disrespected.

So it wasn't about the press, it was about Trump's ego and Acosta's tantrum.

Even if Trump let Acosta stay, do you think he would ever call on him again? CNN would do better to replace him with someone else at this point, even if his pass wasn't revoked.

Yes, and I pointed out to you that there is simply no comparison between Obama's Gestapo-like treatment of the press, and Trump telling a pompous ass of a reporter to take a hike. The former is an objectively non-trivial danger to a free press, and the latter isn't a danger at all.

Which is to say that revoking Acosta's White House credentials was the more productive option.

I don't see a basis. We've certainly had belligerent news reporters before. "I don't like him" is not a valid argument for yanking press credentials, IMO. It wasn't valid for Obama - and it's not valid for Trump.
