  • Kudos where kudos are due... Fox is doing the right thing, IMO. As I recall, CNN did the same thing when Obama tried to revoke Fox's access.

It's not a threat to anybody. Like I said earlier, CNN is free to continue publishing whatever lies it wants about the Trump administration, so the First Amendment is unsullied by the White House's decision.

The removal of Acosta an unabashed attempt to censor the press, it’s an abuse of the First Amendment against abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press. It’s based on Trump’s unwillingness (or inability) to answer the hard questions. This is acknowledged by a score of high profile media outlets which have supported Acosta and CNN’s law suit...including rival Fox News.

Not even close. CNN is free to continue promoting its fake news without hindrance.

How so? CNN has not been stifled or shut out. Just one fame whore who finally crossed the line. Nothing like what Obama tried to do with Fox News (disallowing an entire organization from attending any news conference not just presidential ones but those held by agencies and departments in the federal government). That was an unabashed attempt to censor the press.

Trump is possibly the most accessible president we've had in living memory. He'll regularly stop and talk to reporters for up to half an hour fielding their questions -- including the hard ones.

Rallying around Acosta represents a "protecting our own" mentality and nothing more. Perhaps you should explain how that corroborates the notion that news organizations circling the wagons around CNN is evidence that, as you alleged, "It’s based on Trump’s unwillingness (or inability) to answer the hard questions."

He is right. But it is unknown how sinister that attempt is. That is, is this limited to a spat with cnn, or is it aimed at all outlets that ask him questions he doesnt like or who do not give him the praise he believes he deserves.

No, Jim, he's not. It's a Drama Queen rant that makes no sense. Trump will talk to any press any time - he LOVES to be the center of attention. Acosta was being a jackasss, and Trump stood up to him. Try reading the rant that Tassman posted again --- "an unabashed attempt to censor the press"... do you REALLY buy that? HONESTLY?

                      • I've seen a number of people agree that Acosta's behavior was inappropriate, on at least some level. So, a hypothetical:

If Trump weren't the loudmouthed buffoon that he is*, and had some semblance of moral high ground, would the WH removal of Acosta's pass still be objectionable?

                        *A stretch, I know...just wondering.

Several pundits have over the past few days have revealed just how disliked Acosta is by the rest of the D.C. press corp. They despise his constant attempts to make himself the story as well as how he eats up everyone else's time with his grandstanding. He is in effect the Trump of the press corps

You should hate it just a tad more CP, enough to keep you from it entirely.

The trend among Trump supporters and conservatives is to minimize everything he does that is off the rails. I recognize and see instances of over-emphasis on the liberal side as well, instances of making mountains out of molehills. And because of the extreme conservative bias of many of you that regard me as CP describes here, I try to point out when I see that happening, so you are aware of the fact I try to keep an even hand.

As I've said, I try to keep my pulse on a wide range of media outlets, to see what they cover, what they minimize, what they emphasize.

However, Trump is the extreme. Especially as regards attacks on the press. We have a wide range of press organizations, Fox, CNN, MSNBC, WP, NYT, BBC etc all seeing this as a direct attack, not on Acosta's rudeness, but on the Press's access and capacity to ask probing or defining questions - a necessary part of gathering and reporting the news. When such a wide range of organizations see an act as a direct threat, we should take heed. I am not wearing a tin foil hat - I am simply observing the reactions of the professional press organizations across the spectrum to what Trump has done.

As has been repeatedly pointed out, if his opposition wasn't continuously exaggerating, misrepresenting and often outright fabricating many wouldn't feel the need to defend him.
