She was ELECTED and REELECTED by DEMOCRATS.

Snipes, who was appointed by Gov. Jeb Bush to replace Oliphant, will go on to face Republican Steve Shin in the general election. Oliphant, 50, who was suspended by Bush for incompetence last November, trailed Snipes and community activist Jamie Bloodworth by a large margin. Snipes, 61, has overseen two successful elections since she took over the office in November.

Jeb Bush did, in fact, appoint Brenda Snipes to her post in 2004, because her predecessor, Miriam Oliphant, was suspended for bad conduct.

WHY did Bush fire the BLACK FEMALE DEMOCRAT Oliphant?

Government investigators found that not only had her office neglected to perform some of its most essential tasks, but it had gone almost $1 million over budget. Among other findings was that Oliphant fired many experienced staff members, and replaced them with an all black and less (in some cases not-at-all) experienced friends and associates with significantly higher rates of pay.

She hired a college admissions representative who didn't even know what a primary election was and put her in charge of registration and absentee ballots. She promoted a computer specialist, whom she'd met in her condominium building, to deputy supervisor.

One of the most questioned of Oliphant's personnel decisions was that of hiring a homeless man, Glen Davis, whom she met at the same shelter as her sister, who is also homeless. Davis, who was given mail room duties, failed to process over 300 absentee ballots for a 2002 primary election. His performance notwithstanding, shortly before her removal Oliphant gave Davis a $5000 raise.

Due to Oliphant not hiring enough poll workers during the same 2002 primary, precinct voting locations had to open late and close early. All this was intolerable to Broward residents who had not forgotten the county's handling of the 2000 Presidential Election.

After APPOINTING Snipes to her position ---- now hold your seat for this part, Jim --- she was ELECTED by your Democrat colleagues to continue in that position.

Bush gave her a chance, and DEMOCRATS kept her in office.

With South Florida again in the national eye on races too close to call and troubles in counting and re-counting votes, so, too is the supervisor of elections.

Broward Supervisor Brenda Snipes took office 15 years ago after the governor suspended her predecessor, Miriam Oliphant.

And, more from the Miami Herald...

Sept. 1, 2004: Democratic voters showed their confidence in Brenda Snipes as supervisor of elections, denying Miriam Oliphant’s bid to take back her job. Snipes said she felt “validated” by her landslide victory. “

A lot of people tagged me as some kind of pawn. Some people tried to make my appointment by the governor a negative thing,” Snipes said Tuesday night. “Now I can say I’m appointed and elected.”

So you can't blame REPUBLICANS for this disaster, Jim --- it's your own DEMOCRATS who are to blame for this fiasco.
She can be fired any time, CP. You're working to hard.

So, first, "fiasco" is definitely a bit of a stretch. That there is mismanagement in Broward county seems true. But there also seems to be a significant amount of conspiracy theory spinning as well. There is a fairly decent breakdown of the history of elections in that country here. Based on that, and a few other articles, I do agree they need better personnel and better management. I'm not seeing a "fiasco." Frankly, in general, the Democrats appear to be on the worse end of pretty much all the mismanagement because it ends up costing them votes.

Then why would Jim be so incensed that Republicans hadn't ousted her!

For example, the ballot, which was designed by a DEMOCRAT WOMAN who was Democratically ELECTED by DEMOCRATS, where the Senate race is way "down ballot" under a column of instructions.

Well, um, I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to know this because, uh, some, uh, people out there in our nation don't have maps and, uh, I believe that our education like such as in South Africa and, uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and, I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., uh, or, uh, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future. For our children.

And that applies to Floriduh, as well.

I'd respond, but I was busy answering the call of the nice Microsoft technician who wanted to alert me to the presence of harmful software on my computer by taking me to the event viewer and showing me all those nasty errors produced by some of those nasty viruses and harmful programs. Fortunately, he had a quick solution that only required me to load some free software onto my computer from this website he pointed me to - and now my computer problems are gone...

P.S. for those who are not computer-savvy - the previous was said in jest. Any such call from a "Microsoft Technician" is a scam and what they will get you to do is actually load harmful software on your computer. They should be ignored, hung up on, or you can do what I do: suggest that they might be better off if they got an honest job!

P.P.S. One time, I just started laughing and couldn't stop. It really upset them...

P.P.P.S . One time I was visiting my niece, and I handed the phone to her 3-year-old daughter, who had all sorts of questions for the nice man...

Nowadays it seems like all of the scammers are automated, though, so there's not really an opportunity to try to screw with them. But it would be cool to, while pretending to go along with it, pull out a headphone, attach it to something that plays music, turn it up all the way (don't play anything yet), then suddenly put it next to phone and and start playing some loud audio.
