  • California Burns: Trump Blames...

    Donald J. Trump
    ‏Verified account @realDonaldTrump

There is no reason for these massive, deadly and costly forest fires in California except that forest management is so poor. Billions of dollars are given each year, with so many lives lost, all because of gross mismanagement of the forests. Remedy now, or no more Fed payments!
Now I take it for granted that he shot from the hip, and put his foot in his mouth. But from what I have read over time poor forest management is a big factor in the wildfires. Any thoughts...

Whether it is or isn't (and I'll assume for the sake of argument it is), refusing to help affected citizens in the future is simply punishing them for the sins of others. It's as bad as the lady who wrote into an ethics columnist complaining about a friend who refused to donate money to hurricane relief in Texas because the state voted for Trump.
"I am not angered that the Moral Majority boys campaign against abortion. I am angry when the same men who say, "Save OUR children" bellow "Build more and bigger bombers." That's right! Blast the children in other nations into eternity, or limbless misery as they lay crippled from "OUR" bombers! This does not jell." - Leonard Ravenhill

Well, that one depends, I suppose. Did they donate the money they otherwise would have donated to Texas to a different charity?

This is one of Trumps sillier claims since much of California is thousands of acres of very dry brush that naturally is supposed to burn in huge fires. That does make fire prevention a rather difficult process. That being said, instead of building a bullet train nobody wants, buying those huge aircraft capable of dumping lots of water on fires might be a better investment.

Here is a decent article on both the need for and difficulties with controlled burns.

Trumps reaction is similar to what he did to Puerto rico, I believe. California has been hostile to him and his policies and so he wants an excuse to punish them. Hopefully he won't be as successful in California as he was in puert rico.

Puerto Rico let its power grid become in such a state where a major storm was going to wipe it out and this has been known since Bush was in office and yet neither Bush nor Obama did anything about it. California has squandered billions on a bullet trains no one wants vs updating its fire fighting capabilities. As I said again, you ignore the local issues that allowed things to happen so you can scream how much you hate Trump. I’m a native to California and have seen first hand how the state flushed billions on dumb programs and expects to be bailed out from their own poor choices.

              Love the compassion.

You can't predict these things, and the policies related to controlled burns were changed before these fires so they have recognized that error and are on the path to working to correct it. And that is not by any stretch the sole cause here. California has been experiancing deep drought for years now. And it has been much hotter in california than normal for several years in a row now. Are you really going to go this direction? Are you really going to join the spirit of judgement and hate instead of having compassion on how many thousands who have lost everthing.

Yes how dare I point out facts you flat ignore in your hate filled rants. Who cares if the California government has flushed 11 billion down the hole in a worthless bullet train nobody wants vs buying better firefighting equipmemt?

It’s my family that finds themselves in the middle of that jack ass so stop lying about my ‘lack of compassion’ because I’m doing what millions of native Californians have done and pointing out the failures of the state government that you flat ignore in your hate rants against Trump. I know many who have lost everything and how the state government felt bullet trains were more important than modernizing water storage, desalinization plants, modern firefighting equipmemt, etc. Now until it is your family members that have suffered and your friends that have lost everything you have nothing to tell me, so take your self rightousness and shove it, Pharisee. You could care less about them, you just use them for another self righteous dig at Trump.

Sure did, so what's new? In fact, leaving aside Trump's sheer callousness, many of the burn areas have been in federally managed lands.

No, global warming (as denied by Trump and his mindless followers) is what's ultimately responsible for the ferocity of the fires. "We are entering a new normal. The rate of spread is exponentially more than it used to be," said Ventura County Fire Chief Mark Lorenzen, noting at a press conference that California's fires in 2018 grow far more quickly than they did even 10 years ago".

I wonder if Tazzy has access to a news paper, wildfires are a California tradition that my grandparents talk about going on in the 50’s. Much of California is dry brush and has been having wildfires for centuries it’s just that historically much of California was empty and nobody cared if thousands of acres of dry brush burned. People only care now that there’s 30 million people in that thousands of acres of dry brush.

You are off the rails pix. We are talking about Trump threatening to pull aid to thousands that have lost everything. That's not a sensible thing to do. And given Trump's history with Puerto Rico and his penchant for revenge and his problems with Jerry brown it is likely a vengeance play at the expense of thousands of people who've suffered major losses.

Of course I am because I don’t let my hatred of a man control me in the way you do. Are you a native to California Jim? Nope, but I am and do you what actually happens? The state spends billions in projects nobody wants and let’s important projects slip by. Just as you close your eyes and ignore the self destruction Puerto Rico did upon itself by refusing to update its power grid you close your eyes and ignore how California destroys itself by wasting billions on bullet trains vs fire equipmemt and fire prevention. Keep those eyes slammed shut because in your hate filled world, pointing out local government failure is hateful because it’s wrong apparently to blame local government for problems of their own creation. Now deal with these facts or go away Pharasee. It isn’t your family in danger because of the stupidity of the local government.

Wildfires in that region are about as common as a hurricane hitting the Gulf Coast.

True. The difference is one of scale re hurricanes hitting the Gulf Coast and the California wildfires. The Camp Fire is the deadliest and most destructive in the state's history. Wild fires and hurricanes are larger and more frequent than in the past and this is attributable to the effects of global warming according to most people.
