Natural Science 301 Guidelines

This is an open forum area for all members for discussions on all issues of science and origins. This area will and does get volatile at times, but we ask that it be kept to a dull roar, and moderators will intervene to keep the peace if necessary. This means obvious trolling and flaming that becomes a problem will be dealt with, and you might find yourself in the doghouse.

As usual, Tweb rules apply. If you haven't read them now would be a good time.

An excuse for what? Unlike so many of the sanctimonious countries we've actually seen a significant reduction.

True, but the next time there is a heat wave it is immediately seized upon and used as evidence for AGW by many of the same folks who point that out. Consistency please.

Shall I note you down as supportive of the Obama administration's climate policies, during who's tenure the reduction was achieved?

I’m not aware of “heat waves” being seized upon and "used as evidence for AGW by many of the same folks, who point that out”, i.e. scientists. Scientific indicators of global warming are long-term warming trends observed in the historical record. They include increasing numbers of heat waves and increased forest fires, sea-level rise, melting glaciers and warming of the poles etc.

I have never used heatwaves as arguments for global warming. The main evidence for AGW comes from the temperature records.

Don't mistake what journalists and commentators are writing about for what the scientists are writing about.

That's probably a huge part of the problem - the media is always looking to sensationalize something, so the California fires, the hurricanes.... these are all mentioned as "proof" of warming. Even snow storms are touted as proof!

In my experience the media only knows how to sell a handful of different science stories: Catastrophy is looming! Martha treated her foot lice and you won't believe how. X causes cancer. Scientists are about to change everything forever - New Revolution. etc...

By the time they interview the scientist they've already more or less settled on a story and they just want one or two golden quotes to slap into the article.

That's not to say that scientists themselves have been all that good at managing the media. The whole circus around the IPCC is full evidence of that. Scientists in general all the way up to the nineties were content to stay within the walls of academia. But lately political factions are trying to make use of various scientific reports to further their own cause, which has put the scientists under a kind of scrutiny of everything they say that they've never had before.

The fact that the IPCC tends to produce tome's at the size of two thousand pages (which is how long it gets once the opinions of the entire worldwide scientific community has been pressed into the same mold) pretty much ensures that no one reads it.

Not even the summary which is still over a hundred pages long.

And they mocked Carl Sagan back in the seventies when he said it was important for scientists to communicate with the public.

And the .... um.... "experts"... who post here often appear to be quite equivalent to the more extreme "false preachers" or TV televangelists --- but with vicious attacks against anybody who doesn't come to confession. They make it so you don't WANT to believe AGW.

I don't blame you, I feel caught between a rock and a hard place at times.

If it helps you I don't "want" to believe in AGW either. Its not something anyone wants to believe in. Not unless they have a very misanthropic view.

Here's another thing, Leon.... those who are really promoting AGW in the public theater don't really seem willing to make the personal sacrifices they want to demand of others. It's a legitimate question "ok, you believe this, what are YOU personally doing about it".

With respect to that, I'm personally doing more "green" things myself than the people I personally know who are 'preaching' AGW, and I'm a skeptic!

Texas. the epitomy of "Oil country", leads the nation in Wind generated power with more coming online every day!

In addition, Solar farms are "popping up all over Texas". In fact, one of the towns south of me has approved a Solar farm to be constructed. Texas is one of the states in the Union leading the way to green energy...so...IMO, we are doing our part.

True! Another factoid: Texas is the number one state in the union for hunting and fishing licenses, generating over $100 million a year to fund state wildlife and fish conservation!

Speaking as someone who works in the field of renewable energy, the vast majority of the wind projects I've been involved in have been in Texas.
