I vaguely remember that he tried to get help from the then Soviet Union, which ignored his pleas. After that he forced the masses to drink the poisoned Flavor-Aid (Not Kool-Aid).

They knew that at some point they were going to die because they practiced committing revolutionary suicide on a number of occasions. Some of them might have believed that the day they died was just another practice session, but when they started seeing people drop dead from the cyanide, they knew. The kids had no idea.

Several people survived the day just by telling the armed security guards that they didn't want to die that day and the guards let them go. Jones's own son survived because the Jonestown basketball team was in the capital and he convinced a bunch of other people not to do it.
