The Angel of the Lord is a prominent figure in the OT. He is a heavenly messenger/angel. Throughout the OT The Angel of the Lord is at times indistinguishable from God (see Ex. 3; Gen. 31), yet distinct from God (see Zech. 1). Ex. 33:20 states that no one can see God and live. Yet there are examples in the OT where people were shocked that they had seen God and lived (see Gen. 16; Judg. 13). The Angel of the Lord is no ordinary angelic messenger. God's name is in him and he is associated with the very presence of God (Isa. 63:9; Josh. 5:15).
Interestingly, The Angel of the Lord restricts his appearances to before the incarnation making no appearance in the NT; yea, it seems the Christ is this person.
