  • 13 pounds of plastic found inside dead whale

A sperm whale washed up dead in Indonesia was found to have more than a little bit of human rubbish inside it, mostly plastic.

Found, Inside Dead Sperm Whale: 100 Plastic Cups, 4 Plastic Bottles, 25 Plastic Bags, 2 Flip-Flops

...officials have found nearly 13 pounds (6 kilograms) of plastic trash in the stomach of a dead sperm whale that washed ashore on a beach in southern Indonesia late Monday (Nov. 19).

The trash included more than 100 plastic cups, four plastic bottles, 25 plastic bags, two flip-flops and hundreds of other pieces of plastic

    That's pretty depressing.

Suffice it to say, eating that amount of plastic probably isn't very healthy for a whale. Apart from killing off marine life, this problem also affects humans because we tend to eat quite a lot of fish. If those fish are full of microplastic (tiny broken-down pieces of plastic), our bodies in turn can suffer from having absorbed a lot of plastic.

When grocery stores and Walmart switched from paper bags to plastic, it caused quite a bit of problems for ranchers and farmers, as well - the empty bags would blow across pastures, snag on bushes or barbed wire fences, and cows and horses would ingest them. They can kill cows and horses, too.

(I know, you don't like cows and horses )

I'm wondering, with the war on plastic straws, if we're going to see a return to paper bags in grocery and department stores. At least they can decompose.

There's been a number of articles here about how often they end up in the ocean (nearly all the cities here are coastal, inland areas here tend to be mountainous).

All the major supermarket chains here have already brought in bans on plastic grocery bags or are bringing them in early next year. Means we have to remember to bring reusable bags every time we go supermarket shopping which is a bit annoying.

I saw a news article today that the government here is planning to all single-use plastic bags by law for all shops in about 6 months. I suspect it will annoy quite a few people, but overall I get the impression the public can understand the need for it because the amount that seems to be ending up in the ocean is a problem. Whales shouldn't be washing up dead with hundreds of pieces of plastic inside them!

I'm guessing you left out the word "ban" there.

While I was thinking about how much better paper bags decompose, Mrs CP and I just watched the "Oregon" segment of Aerial America, and they showed a pulp mill plant that makes paper - and the tremendous negative ecological impact that production of paper makes.

I have become quite an Amazon customer, buying lots of things for which I used to make trips to the store. (Free shipping, no sales tax, etc.) Unfortunately, this means lots of cardboard boxes, plastic "air bag" fillers and Styrofoam. I'm rethinking this already.

Ugh... so gross. I've been trying to reduce/eliminate the plastic I use. But when you start avoiding it you realize how much of it is everywhere.

Yeah, we've pretty much even stopped using Styrofoam for plates and cups and stuff - mostly paper and cardboard.

Back in the day, we even used paper/wax straws. I don't see why we can't go back to that.

I've mentioned this before on the site, but we are no longer able to recycle plastic bags here. So much more is now ending up in landfills, it's very sad. I reuse and reuse as much as I can of old bags we have, and take my own sturdy reusable bags whenever I shop. Might need to eventually make some cloth bags.

Boson Pizza restaurants here use a heavy cardboard straw. Lasts through several glasses of water or whatever you are drinking. It's a good idea, and other places should follow suit.

Yes. And that's why we went to plastic years ago, etc. and so on.

We can only do so much, you know.
