And forget about the worldwide oil glut that experts are predicting will keep fuel prices down even through the Christmas holidays (prices here have dropped 41¢ or more in the past 44 days). Just read this article from a few of the gilets jaunes. Interesting perspectives:

Meanwhile here in America, evil Trump has caused the gas prices to plummet to about $2/gallon. The cad! He is trying to ruin the environment by making people drive and pollute more!

It wasn't a tax on sugar (I think you know that) but a control on portion size of sugary drinks. I wouldn't have been allowed (the law was struck down) to buy a 64 oz drink, or even a 24 oz drink (the cap was 16 oz), but I could buy four 16 oz drinks. And it wasn't applied evenly across vendors. As a matter of fact, it actually didn't apply to 7/11, which is regulated by the state, not NYC.

(incidentally, the "rule" was struck down because it was enacted by the Board of Health which exceeded its authority, violating the separation of powers doctrine as decided by the New York Court of Appeals in Boreali v. Axelrod - it should have been legislation brought on by the city council, which was bypassed.)
I think the purpose of the rule was correct - but the implementation sucked. A limit on size is mostly ridiculous, for the reasons you cite. The approach is inane. A tax on sugar is a better approach.

I used to be a Pepsi-holic. I was also (when I was very young) deeply in debt.

At a "financial freedom" seminar, one of the suggestions for saving money was to stop purchasing drinks with meals -- that if you eat out, drink water instead of tea or coke. They said that the drinks were 20-30% of your meal.

So, Mrs CP and I decided we'd start drinking water with meals, and at first I hated it.

Over time, however, I got used to it, and one day decided I'd reward myself by ordering a Dr Pepper. I nearly GAGGED it so freakin' sweet!!! So, back to water with lemon!

I'm sure, if one of those were Starlight's car, he'd have the very same attitude. "Oh, that's just a car - I'll get another!"

                            Perhaps Starlight will believe Aljazeera...

Macron tells PM to hold talks after worst riots in Paris in years

French President Emmanuel Macron has ordered his prime minister to hold talks with political leaders and demonstrators to end the nationwide protests after rioters turned central Paris into a battle zone.

After a meeting with members of his government on Sunday, the French presidency said in a statement that Macron also asked his interior minister to prepare security forces for future protests.

A French presidential source said Macron would not speak to the nation on Sunday despite calls for him to offer immediate concessions to demonstrators, and said the idea of imposing a state of emergency had not been discussed.

The meeting came a day after riots in the capital city by anti-government protesters - the worst in a decade - left hundreds injured and widespread destruction around the capital.

The government said it will brief the French Senate on Tuesday about the tax protests in Paris that turned into a riot, and its measures to prevent a repeat of the damages.

Earlier on Sunday, Macron visited the Arc de Triomphe in Paris after the famous landmark was defaced during the riots.

TV images showed the inside of the monument ransacked with a statue of Marianne, a symbol of the French Republic, smashed, and graffiti scrawled on the exterior.

Some bystanders cheered the president but more jeered him, with some protesters chanting: "Macron, resign!"

Interior Minister Christophe Castaner attributed the violence to "specialists in sowing conflict, specialists in destruction".

Or, perhaps Starlight should call the Frenchies and splain "it's just a few cars, guys, chillax!"

One thing which I've found a pleasant surprise is that French authorities are differentiating between the peaceful protestors (those whose leaders he hopes to meet in the post above) and so-called professional demonstrators who tag along and then cause all the damage.

Usually they all get lumped together and it becomes an excuse for the authorities to dismiss the issues which caused protests in the first place. Nice to see it doesn't seem to be happening here.

What is useful to point out is that the demonstrators still have the backing of the French public, despite the damage caused by those who enjoy doing so. Also of note is that the protest has moved on from fuel, shifting into a much broader anti-government and anti-Macron protest movement about inequality and poor living standards.

That's something that often gets ignored by our MSM, Evo.... that there are actually (and I like how you phrased it) so-called professional demonstrators who often are at the core of these things...
