  • Prevalence of moon landing conspiracy theories

An offhand discussion at work the other day about moon landing conspiracy theories revealed that the majority of people in my immediate vicinity saw merit to these theories/doubted that man had ever been to the moon . Given that this was only 4 or 5 people, this was hardly much of a sample size, but it made me wonder about the prevalence of said theories, both in the general public and on TWeb. I especially wonder about the latter because my corner of the office leans conservative.

Blast the children in other nations into eternity, or limbless misery as they lay crippled from "OUR" bombers! This does not jell." - Leonard Ravenhill

Do these people also disbelieve in modern space exploration - e.g. mars rovers / pluto flybys etc? Or is the view simply that the original moon landing might have been faked as a part of cold-war propaganda?
"I hate him passionately", he's "a demonic force" - Tucker Carlson, in private, on Donald Trump
"Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic socialism" - George Orwell
"[Capitalism] as it exists today is, in my opinion, the real source of evils. I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy" - Albert Einstein

The former, it seems, though the latter is being cited as the obvious motive. The main sticking point I've heard from a couple of my co-workers is that that problems passing through the Van Allen belt with modern technology demonstrates the technology in 1969 would certainly have been insufficient.

(No, I am not one of the skeptics.)

The biggest problem with such theories is the idea that a hoax that huge could be pulled off by 1) by government workers 2) with no leaks.

I suspect that for many people, the appeal of conspiracy theories is the comfort of a structured worldview. IE, that those in positions of power are highly organized and competent(even if opposed to you), and it makes sense of otherwise random inconsistencies of life. The truth, most of the time, is that humans are often incompetent and largely unpredictable. Despite that, we manage to do amazing - and for some, unbelievable - achievements like traveling to the moon.

When I think about it in those terms, I can see the appeal to it.

like holocaust denial - the more time between the actual event and the present, the more people there will be that will find merit in denying it's reality. I am surprised it was as many as you say. It's sad really. And I would guess part of it is the anti-science tendency in conservative voters spurred on by the various and sundry pseudo science outlets and general conspiracy paranoia they see embraced by their leaders. E.g. Ken Ham and many evangelicals, Trump and his attitude towards AGW and a whole host of other conspiracy theories.

My brethren, do not hold your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ with an attitude of personal favoritism. James 2:1

If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not  bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man’s religion is worthless James 1:26

This you know, my beloved brethren. But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger; James 1:19

Those in glass houses should not throw stones. Let's not pretend that world-view trumping science is limited to the right side of the political spectrum.

It's getting difficult to dialogue with you about anything, Jim; your paranoia regarding Public Enemy #1 is tainting everything you post these days.

That would be the most amazing thing --- if it were a hoax and not one single person came forward with proof that it was.

We have the left denying basic biology for instance.

But they didn't keep the secret perfectly and things were leaked. That is how the conspiracy people know about the conspiracy. duh.

                        Laughing.

I think what happened in some cases is that people saw the movie Capricorn One and believed it was a documentary!

I forget which of the astronauts said it, but between the magnitude and complexity of the cover-up that would be needed to fool the public into believing that man landed on the moon versus actually landing man on the moon, the latter would be significantly easier.

And considering that you can use a telescope that you can buy in a store to see the lunar landing sites for yourself...

That is assuming that Nasa hasn't hacked all of the telescopes, or that the moon is even real.
