      So it's not a weekend at Bernie's?

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has just completed three weeks of radiation treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, the U.S. Supreme Court disclosed Friday.

The radiation therapy, conducted on an outpatient basis, began Aug. 5, shortly after a localized cancerous tumor was discovered on Ginsburg's pancreas. The treatment included the insertion of a stent in Ginsburg's bile duct, according to a statement issued by the court.

Doctors at Sloan Kettering said further tests showed no evidence of disease elsewhere in the body. The treatment comes just months after Ginsburg was operated on for lung cancer last December. The 86-year-old justice has been treated for cancer in various forms over the past 20 years.

"Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg today completed a three-week course of stereotactic ablative radiation therapy at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City," a statement from the Supreme Court read. "The focused radiation treatment began on August 5 and was administered on an outpatient basis to treat a tumor on her pancreas. The abnormality was first detected after a routine blood test in early July, and a biopsy performed on July 31 at Sloan Kettering confirmed a localized malignant tumor.

"As part of her treatment, a bile duct stent was placed. The Justice tolerated treatment well. She cancelled her annual summer visit to Santa Fe, but has otherwise maintained an active schedule. The tumor was treated definitively and there is no evidence of disease elsewhere in the body. Justice Ginsburg will continue to have periodic blood tests and scans. No further treatment is needed at this time."

The Supreme Court's statement refers to a "stereotactic ablative radiation." Dr. Timothy Cannon, a gastrointestinal oncology specialist at Inova Schar Cancer Institute in Virginia who was not involved in Ginsburg's treatment, said, "That is the cutting-edge new cancer treatment, but it is not a cure for a pancreatic mass."

The statement from the court does not say what type of tumor it is. "The mystery is what kind of cancer this is," Cannon said. "Is it a slow-growing metastases of her lung cancer? Is it a recurrence of her pancreatic cancer from 10 years ago or is it a new cancer in someone predisposed to getting cancer?"

As he left for the G-7 meeting in France, President Trump said of the justice, "Our thoughts and prayers are with her. We wish her well. She's strong, she's tough. She's pulled through a lot."

I think that had Clinton won, Ginsburg would have looked at retirement toward the end of Clinton's presidency - but she will avoid it with Trump if at all possible. Would probably have been the same with any Republican president.

Why? She's made it repeatedly clear she likes being on the Court and wants to keep doing it as long as she can. She kept a consistent message during Obama's years and Trump's that she'll keep doing the job as long as she feels she is able to do so. And she certainly has demonstrated she's able to do it, not letting her surgeries actually stop her from writing opinions.

Rogue06 mentioned that Hillary claimed Ginsburg would be happy in retirement if she won... but would Ginsburg be happy in retirement? There's not much that really waits for her, given her kids are all grown up and her husband died 9 years ago. Heck, she's commented about how the work on the court helped her cope with his death, another reason why I expect she wants to stay on, so she has something to do.

I was curious, so I looked at the list of justices who actually retired from 1980 to present. All justices who retired 1980 or later had a living spouse at the time, except David Souter (who never married), and his resignation by all accounts came from him being sick of Washington and wanting to move back home. It makes sense to want to spend your golden years with your family. That's not really an incentive for someone whose husband isn't alive anymore and all the kids are grown up.

Another reason is that I happened to listen to a podcast about a year ago where someone who spends time actually observing the court--Garrett Epps, for the record--was on it and he was talking about how conspiracy theories about Kennedy's retirement were nonsense, that it was just plain obvious to him watching Kennedy that Kennedy wasn't interested anymore and just retired for that reason. And he mentioned that Ginsburg, in contrast, was energized and interested during the court cases. There's simply not an indication that she's staying on despite a desire to leave.

So the idea that she's only staying on because she doesn't want Trump to chooser her replacement seems to just be a case of people--conservative and liberal--projecting their personal thoughts about the ramifications of her retiring onto her rather than it being based on anything Ginsburg has actually said or done.

Ya know when giving someone the last word it really isn't necessary to tell them they can have the last word.
