  • Elizabeth Warren running for President

Elizabeth Warren today announced that she is running for President (well, "forming an exploratory committee" which is basically the same thing). Her announcement ad is pretty good:

Warren has a strong record on standing up to Wall St and standing against corruption. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau created by her has successfully prosecuted criminal behavior to the tune of over $8.6 billion, returning much of that money to the people who were defrauded.

But however much I love her focus on corruption and white-collar crime and Wall St, her background/interest in other policy areas seems a little weak. That is one reason for me why I view her as being only the second-equal best option (along with a few other lesser-known Progressives) for the Democratic nominee, behind Bernie who seems a clear first choice.

P.S. No racial slurs please in this thread (by which I mean I'm banning the word "Pocahontas").

Yeah, I think she'll make a great candidate, right up there with B Sanders. Should make for an interesting primary, if Sanders even runs. Funny how middle class and poor republicans favor corrupt swamp creatures who are in bed with Wall st., the very people that are purposely screwing them over, and against the very people who know exactly what Corporate America is up to and who expose it, and vow to do something about it. I don't think I'll ever figure them out.

I think it will be a large primary with ~16 people running. I anticipate about 4 strong progressives will run, there'll be about 4 mild progressives pretending to be strong progressives, 4 centrists pretending to be mild progressives, and 4 right-leaning corporatists not bothering to hide their leanings. All of them will be better than any of the dogs breakfast of Republican candidates in 2016. And I think it will help the party and the country to have so many progressive and/or pretend-progressive voices on stage in the debates, as it will force the media to give air-time to progressive views.

Maybe Trump thought he could drain the swamp into his Cabinet, so that the swamp would then be empty because it was all in his Cabinet? Obviously any voters who are anti-swamp yet vote right-wing don't actually understand basic politics and political alignment, but nobody ever accused Trump's voters of being bright.

Gosh, you'd think with all the virtue signaling and wokeness on most mainstream media, one or two of them could air progressive views.

This is like when Howard Dean was named Chair of the Democratic National Committee. Republicans were more excited about it than Democrats!

Source: 2020 — CNN’s Harry Enten: Elizabeth Warren Is ‘Below-Par Candidate’

CNN Politics senior writer and analyst Harry Enten branded Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) a “below-par candidate” following the launch of the progressive firebrand’s 2020 presidential exploratory committee Monday. He highlighted that Hillary Clinton won Massachusetts by a wider margin in the 2016 presidential election than the senator’s 2018 re-election bid.

My liberal friends seem mostly upset about this because they don't think she can win.

She should have cooked up a pot of that old Cherokee favorite, Oriental Beef Stir-Fry.

Meh, the field will probably be crowded and the last 2 presidents we've had were individuals that people didn't really take seriously until they unexpectedly and abruptly emerged as a frontrunner.

The only thing interesting in terms of primaries at this point is whether someone will try to beat Trump for the Republican nomination.

I don't think so, unless a total bombshell sinks his presidency in the next few months (which is possible).

The thing with Obama and Trump is that each mounted a credible bid for the nomination. Warren, on the other hand, has made herself a laughing stock before the first vote has even been cast. She's only fooling herself if she thinks her Indian ancestry fiasco is going to be quietly forgotten.

Obama was thought of as a credible contender since he electrified the crowd at the 2004 DNC. He didn't come out of nowhere.

It was the Democrat party, not the Democrat voters, who didn't take Obama particularly seriously because he was running against Hillary who the Democrat party had already decided was going to be their nominee, with people like Bill Clinton and even the eventual VP Joe Biden making racially disparaging remarks about Obama. I read once that during the primary, Obama and Hillary had a confrontation on an airport tarmac where Hillary lost her cool, and Obama quietly stared her down. He later said that it was in that moment that he knew he could beat her.
