I think this works the opposite way to how you expect.

Precisely because our own nation is small and relatively uninteresting and relatively scandal-free, people here tend to focus internationally rather than locally. A politics junkie like me, as a result, reads about 10 international stories for every local or national story I read.

Whereas it's my observation that people in big and complex nations (US, EU) find there is so much of interest and complexity happening within their region (at the local, state, federal level etc) that all their time and attention is consumed by that. The higher numbers of people within your city, state, and nation as well as the larger number of levels of government, mean that whatever amount of time you have to spend following news within the US can be entirely consumed by relatively interesting stories, without you needing to go outside your region to look for more.

The result is that people from smaller and less complex nations have a much thinner bubble/no bubble and a much more internationalist perspective and understanding than those who live in bigger more complex nations/territories that result in thick bubbles of self-focus.

Was visiting a relative today who subscribes to the local paper. Saw the front page and thought of this thread...

Grass it turns out, grows in summer. And some people like driving cars. Those are literally the top stories here. Can you see now why instead of subscribing to the true wonders of local and national news, I instead choose to spend my time reading and listening to international news on the internet?

In the entirety of December I can only recall 4 stories of note in my country:
                    1. Several local councils are trialing allowing rent-able shareable electric scooters
                    2. A rocket company successfully launched some satellites into orbit
                    3. The government announced there's going to be a Marijuana referendum in 2020
                    4. The government's special working group on Mental Health concluded that mental health services need more funding and that drug legalization would greatly help things

The US alone has 4 interesting stories a day to read about. Hence why I read international stories from other countries where interesting and exciting and crazy things happen. Like when a US President shuts down the government without understanding what a government shutdown actually is.

So, perhaps you should limit your commentary here to silly little matters with which you actually have some experience or exposure?

Yeah 'reading' about what is happening in the world is not exactly knowing, Starlight. You read biased articles and know everything 3rd hand or more removed. Your idea of what the USA or Europe is like, socially and politically is nothing but a liberal fantasy based on liberal newspapers, TV and movies.

                          Your bubble is complete.

I've visited both the US and Europe in person. As has almost everyone I know - significant international travel is popular here. And I consume a very wide variety of media.

Whereas it amuses me that you guys seem to believe in osmosis and that if you're geographically in the US that knowledge about everything in it will somehow leech into you. And then you get upset when a well-read foreigner knows more than you do.

Let's see... we actually live here, and have for DECADES, and I know Sparko has lived both in various spots in the US (and in Germany)...... but you visited here once.

Yeah, you're right - you are the subject matter expert on life in America!
