From what I can tell, China's target is less Islam and more the Uighur/Uyghur (which are almost all Muslim). Non-Uighur Muslims are generally treated much better. Here's some information about it:

Well that is disturbing. Seems like a rights violation.

This post appears to be tailor-made to provoke a derail.

Given that Islam is a politico-theological system, I'm surprised that China has waited this long to crack down this vigorously. As Terraceth observes, however, this appears to be at least as much about Sinification of the province as it is suppression of Islam; they've been systematically moving in Han Chinese as well.

It was meant as smart-ass comment so yes I'm guilty of a bit of trolling here. Still, it is telling how quite the leftist contingent is on the matter especially considering their sudden interest in "Islamophobia."

The Chinese have also been suffering from acts of violence at the hands of Islamic terrorists, something that rarely gets reported by the Western press. While most of it appears to be linked with Islam (as Terraceth noted non-Muslims are not being harassed), Pan-Turkism and local separatists groups are other factors in play

Hrm? That's not what I said. I said that Muslims that weren't Uighur (an ethnic group) weren't being harassed, not that non-Muslims weren't being harassed. Or perhaps more accurately, Muslims that weren't Uighur are being harassed much less than the Uighur Muslims. My statement was that the target of this seems to less be Islam so much as it is the Uighur, who are almost entirely Muslim, so if you're suppressing Uighur you'll be targeting a lot of Muslims.

It's not fully a Uighur thing; the article notes that while it's mostly Uighur Muslims, there are other Muslims. But going after Islam seems to be of secondary importance to going after the Uighur.

My bad. I misremembered your post causing me to misrepresent it. Again, my apologies.

It still goes to the point of how socialism treats those it doesn't like. Whether Muslim, or some ethnic group, Socialist governments (Soviet Union, China, Cuba, etc) are known for their "cleansing" and "re-education" policies. For a philosophy supposedly based on social equality, socialist countries routinely fail bigly and are guilty of the most heinous of human rights violations on the planet.
