That didn't used to be a factor.

I think his point here is that he claims to be a fiscal conservative.

I'm fiscally conservative but socially pretty centrist.

I've heard it said that a moderate is just a liberal who's afraid to admit what he really is.

Meh. Many people really are moderate in their convictions.

That would mean there are a LOT more liberals than generally thought.

                      I doubt that's the reason.

Or, like myself when it comes to social issues I'm conservative on a number of them such as abortion and 2A issues but liberal on others like drug decriminalization/legalization and prostitution[1]. And when it comes to gay rights I'm pretty middle-of-the-road thinking that they shouldn't be discriminated against and allowed be to "marry"[2] but I also strongly dislike the trend to force people to not merely tolerate or accept it but be forced to celebrate it -- or else.

                        1. While I don't personally approve of such activities I don't think the government ought to make them illegal but rather regulate them. Gambling could also be put in this category. While I actively supported legalizing the lottery in my state over a quarter of a century ago I've personally spent a grand total of $13 on it.

                        2. I strongly favor going back to civil unions that bestow the exact same rights as marriage but leaving actual marriage to couples of the opposite sex

I'm always still in trouble again

In America, for the most part, you don't need a traffic cop standing at a 4-way intersection in America to keep the flow of traffic orderly. In Mexico and other Central and South American nations, it's whoever has the loudest horn and the most aggressive driving.

Plus, while "bribing the cop" no doubt happens in the US, it's standard fare in those other countries.
I have pastor friend serving in Mexico and have got some very scary information about the cartel activity and the human trafficking situations there. The corruption is so rife no one wants to stand up...the few that do, get killed. Even the Roman Catholic church doesn't have the power to protect anymore. I do feel sorry for the people trying to cross...but I can't see it as a good solution. Especially at this point with criminals committing crimes here as well as there....as proved by our own VERY high profile murder of a LEGAL immigrant cop by an ILLEGAL immigrant suspected of having ties to a gang.

Yeah, it's sad - our Church insurance has absolutely refused to allow mission trips to Mexico to be covered on our policy anymore. When we go, we can't go "as a Church", we have to go as individuals, with all the liability on our own backs.

The whole thing is a farce. There's no national emergency other than the risk of Trump's base deserting him over not getting their wall...as reinforced by Coulter and Limbaugh on Fox..and no amount of lies from Trump and Sarah Sanders can turn it into an emergency. "During an interview on Fox News, host Chris Wallace disputed White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders' claim that terrorists pour into the US from across the border with Mexico. According to the State Dept no terrorists have been picked up at the border. The 4,000 referred to by Sanders, were picked up at airports, not at the border crossing".

According to Fortune .com "69% of Americans think Trump's Wall isn't a priority." It's certainly not an emergency.
