  • Va Governor wants campaign finance reform, but takes big checks anyway

    Source: https://www.richmond.com/news/virginia/government-politics/general-assembly/northam-calls-for-campaign-finance-reform-but-says-he-ll/article_70e4e838-fec3-595a-a197-0ffb10c3814f.html

Gov. Ralph Northam said Monday that he will support legislation to reduce the influence of money in state politics, but added that he’ll keep accepting corporate donations until the law changes

Northam said he will back bills to allow no-excuse absentee voting and to repeal Virginia’s law requiring voters to show a photo ID before casting a ballot. Both proposals have failed before in the GOP-led General Assembly, and will likely fail again in the legislative session that begins Wednesday.

Returning to a pledge made during the 2017 gubernatorial campaign, Northam said he supports imposing limits on Virginia’s wide-open campaign finance system, including capping individuals’ donations at $10,000 and banning direct contributions from corporations and businesses.

Despite his calls for reform on the campaign trail, Northam accepted five-figure checks from corporate donors to fund his inauguration last year.
The governor’s PAC, The Way Ahead, has received numerous donations that would fall outside the limits Northam said he supports.
Within the past few months, the committee has received a $25,000 donation from the tobacco giant Altria, several $25,000 donations from health care organizations and a $10,000 donation from the railroad company Norfolk Southern.

Kinda reminds me of when JimL declined my challenge to voluntarily give more to the government than he is legally required, and him responding that there is no mechanism to do so.

"I'd give more, but gosh darn, there just isn't a way to do that!"

Same with all these rich liberals who want laws forcing their peers to give more --- nothing keeps them from paying 95%!!!

I don't really see the issue. Under the current rules he'd just be cutting off his nose to spite his face if he refused those campaign contributions and would just be handing massive advantage to opponents. The desire to fix that so neither he nor anyone else would have to doesn't seem contradictory.

Yeah, I concur.... let's play by the current rules, and get it fixed for the future.

              A totally unrelated example...

Two old hillbillies (am I allowed to say that) got together, and there was the obligatory jug of moonshine.

Jeb pulled out a gun and aimed it at Homer's head, and said "pick up that jug and take a swaller".
              Homer dutifully complied.
Then Jeb handed the gun to Homer and said, "now, hold that gun on me and make me take a swaller!"

People have taken such stands in the past, and refused money they could have otherwise gotten. Given that a lot of the money is spent on advertising, which studies show isn't likely to change many minds, I don't see it as such a huge disadvantage.

By taking and using the very money he is talking about trying to eliminate he is tacitly admitting that the money is useful and should not be eliminated. He is putting the lie to his own words.

I think pushing for change but operating within the current system is smart.

But I most strongly support those who push for change while refusing to take big checks, as they need our support all the more, and they are clearly uncorrupted. The group doing this are the Justice Democrats, an organisation who just had 7 members elected to congress including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Fox News, of course, panicked at their goals of taking care of children, creating jobs and saving the planet, plus did its best to trigger the racism and sexism of its viewers by showing 4 winning Justice Democrat candidates who are women of color:

Also worth noting that the Democratic House just passed a very large bill that included significant campaign finance fixes. Of course the Republicans don't want to fix campaign finance laws as they are far more corrupt than Democrats and benefit more from mega-donors bribing them, so the Republican controlled Senate isn't going to take up this bill.

IIRC you've been shown several times that in recent elections the mega-donors have been contributing to Democrats considerably more than Republicans.

Seems pretty unlikely, but if true, perhaps it could encourage Republicans to actually support the campaign finance reform and anti-corruption changes they keep voting against?
