It’s more than a side-effect, it’s an essential part of human bonding even when procreation is not the goal.

That still doesn't speak to function though, just to benefit.
    See above.

I think that narrows it down a little too much. Undesirable or worrying to who?
Not as far as Merriam Webster is concerned and undesirable or worrying to society, obviously.

Why does it apply to people with Down's Syndrome? Some live productive and fulfilling lives of service that put both of us to shame.
Certainly. But better perhaps to NOT have Down's Syndrome…especially as it shortens the life-span.

Of course all this begs the question. What if the adult with the "atypical sexual interest" is not unscrupulous and does not use trickery or deceit?

No it isn't essential. It's QUITE nice, but not essential. And from an evolutionary standpoint, bonding itself is unnecessary.

Again, too simplistic. Not all abnormalities are even seen by society. For instance, having 6 toes is abnormal, but if they never go without a sock, society is none the wiser to be worried.

True. Physical deformities are an extreme case of abnormality, but others are more subtle, like extra digits, that do not cause undo distress to the general public.

As Tass pointed out, it's the children who are not mature enough to provide informed consent, regardless of the adults character.

Why should we consider informed consent anything more than a social construct with which you happen to agree?
Enter the Church and wash away your sins. For here there is a hospital and not a court of law. Do not be ashamed to enter the Church; be ashamed when you sin, but not when you repent. – St. John Chrysostom

Unless you live in California and want an abortion... then you can consent at any age if you are pregnant.

At least until society and "science" determine otherwise, right?

No, I guess we'll have to wait for your god to explain it to us.

We basically come to that agreement, and over time we may learn differently and change our views just as you see happening throughout history. We evolve, we learn, we change our views.

Has it yet dawned on you that this supports my position and undermines yours?

Really, so what does this manual tell us specifically about pedophilia?
