Tuesday on ABC’s “The View,” co-host Joy Behar said many people rushed to judgment on the viral video encounter between Native American activists and students from Covington Catholic High School, “because we’re desperate to get Trump out of office.”

Co-host Whoopi Goldberg asked, “So many people admitted they made snap judgments before all these other facts came in. But is it that we just instantly say that’s what it is based on what we see in the moment and then have to walk stuff back when it turns out we’re wrong? Why is that? Why do we keep making the same mistake?”

Behar said, “Because we’re desperate to get Trump out of office. That’s why.”

Goldberg said, “But what does that have to do —”

Behar continued, “I think that’s the reason. I think the press jumps the gun a lot because we just have so much circumstantial evidence against this guy that we are basically hoping Cohen’s got the goods and what have you. It’s wishful thinking.”

Yes - Phillips and his group inserted themselves between the Black Israelites and the kids - there is no question about this. The video supports it. That does not translate to "Phillips initiated the confrontation." There is at least one person who notes (it is captured in the audio) that they seem to be inserting themselves between the two antagonists (kids, Black Isrealites) in an attempt to cool things or "make peace." That is also what Phillips claims. The video also does not show how the specific encounter between Sandmann and Phillips began - for that we only have the words of the two people involved, as far as I know.

I think I previously said I was leaving the last word...so I think I just went back on that.

There's ZERO evidence that Phillips and his group inserted themselves between the Black Hebrew Israelites and the kids "in order to diffuse the situation". Walking up to someone and banging a drum directly in their face is initiating the confrontation. The video doesn't support any of your allegations, you're just plain wrong here Carpe.

Poking around a bit, he almost certainly did not serve in Vietnam as a marine (he would have been only 16 in 1971, the year the Marines pulled out). However, it seems that Phillips himself has been careful to not say directly that he was a Vietnam veteran, but only a Vietnam era veteran. This would give the desired impression without being an actual lie.

OBP we did not pull out in 71. We were still there is 73, when I got out. I was in a rear staging area (Okinawa) with the Third Marines (71-through all of 72) most of my tank battalion was still in country at the end of 72.
