The issue may well be the Internet. It gives everyone license to act as they probably would not in person. I don't think I would ever have "gone off" last night if I was face to face with someone. So the search may be a a pointless one - an online civil discussion may simply be impossible unless the two people in question already agree.
You are right, people wouldn't be as rude in real life. And I probably wouldn't be either, so I am sorry for that. It is easy to read motivations into people you have never met, and easier to be rude to people when there are no consequences and where you don't know the person personally.

We used to have some Tweb conventions where people could get together in real life. We haven't had one in years. Jardinprayer was our convention organizer. Nobody knows how to set it all up like she did, hotels and everything.

We do have areas for just joking around and what we call "fellowshipping" and we do encourage everyone to hang out there and just be friends, make jokes and so on. It really is harder to be rude to someone you have already been friendly with in other places.

I swear I am almost ready to just shut down the whole civics section. It seems to bring out the worst in people.

On facebook I have just about stopped posting anything political for a while now. All it does is divide up people.

      Agreed
The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy...returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Martin Luther King

I've had plenty of civil online discussions here and elsewhere with people who disagree with me on all sorts of issues.

Or... maybe they just agree with me that disagreement isn't the same as stupidity?

I find you generally reasonable and communicative, albeit quite frequently wrong*.

                • And a slight twist in 2020. It looks like Trump may face a primary challenge.

                  I have mixed feelings.

Governor Weld? I think he'll have some challenges considering he was the Libertarian Party's nominee for Vice President, sharing the 2016 ticket with Gary Johnson.

We know him in the east because of his roles in Mass and NY.

Oh I don't think he has a prayer. With Trump's Republican approval rating at 80%+ - Weld won't make a dent. But hopefully he'll make some of that 20%- think.... and perhaps vote against Trump in the general election. Trump's base is not enough get him elected. He needs moderates and some of those unhappy Republicans.

Oh you are right! I didn't recognize the name. Now he is claiming to be a Republican?

As far as I can tell, he's considering opposing Trump for the GOP nomination.... in which he's ZERO threat to Trump. If we were to run as an independent, it's possible he could pull some votes from Trump...
