But Vermont’s single-payer dream fell apart when the state figured out how much it would need to raise taxes to finance its new system. Vermont abandoned the government-run plan after finding it would need to increase payroll taxes by 11.5 percent and income tax by 9 percent.
Any given proposal gets costed, and has different ways of changing the current payments people make to private insurance companies into payments made to the medicare system. There can then arise opposition for a variety of reasons, the most common of which is that the private companies are paying the politicians to oppose it.

Currently, California, NY city, NY state, and the Dems at the Federal level all seem to be looking seriously at various possible plans to create medicare-for-all systems with various coverage levels and funding structures.

This seems to me to be an obvious sensible move, as internationally most developed countries successfully use the equivalent of VA-for-all systems (e.g. the UK, NZ) or the equivalent of medicare-for-all systems (e.g. Canada, Australia), with the vast majority of European countries using either of those two systems and delivering healthcare at a much cheaper rate on average than the US. The use of a regulated private healthcare marketplace of the Obamacare style is much rarer, and as far as I am aware the only two Western countries to have successfully implemented such a system are the Netherlands and Switzerland, and resultant healthcare is expensive in those countries compared to those who have VA or Medicare for all equivalent systems.

One of the best comparative analyses I've seen, that features interactive graphs for digging into the international data, is the 2017 Commonwealth Fund healthcare comparative analysis. Of the 11 advanced countries healthcare systems they analyse, they find the UK's implementation (a VA-for-all type system) to be the best overall (also one of the cheapest, costing only just over half of what the US spends), and Australia's implementation (a medicare-for-all type system) to be very close to it (and is slightly cheaper than the UK's system too). The US's current system ranks the worst of the 11 countries in most of their categories and overall, as well as being about a third more expensive than even the most expensive system of the other 10 countries.

It's clear she's not confident talking about the issue and doesn't consider herself an expert as she notes. I would also assess her answers as 100% factually accurate. So all she really needed to do was give exactly the same answers but faster and more confidently. Obviously that will be something that will come with time, repetition, and experience.

However, as I am sure she is aware, any misstatement on the issue is liable to be used against her is a massive way by her enemies. She could be accused of anything from "antisemitism" to "support for terrorism" by bad faith actors if she wasn't 100% careful in how she parsed her statements. So I can understand why she might be hesitant to say anything at all on the issue, and why her replies are so slow (assuming that is real time and the video hasn't been edited to slow it down to make it sound like she took longer to reply than she really did).

There's nothing wrong in general in saying "look this topic area isn't my forte or interest, let's talking about taxes or environmental concerns or healthcare or education or banking etc". There are 435 members of the House, little of what it does relates to Israel and Palestine, not everyone needs to be an expert on those issues.

I'd be happy to show the unedited one, where it's even more obvious she's a ditz.

Here's some more of that interview....

In an appearance on PBS' Fire Line last week, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the socialist Democratic nominee for a New York City Congressional seat that unemployment is low "because everyone has two jobs."

Ocasio-Cortez's assertion was ranked "pants on fire" wrong by Politifact.

Ocasio-Cortez also said, "when this country started, we were not a capitalist economy."

Yeah she mucked up that answer. She was trying to pivot from talking about unemployment specifically to the job market generally and fumbled it. I see her critics constantly pointing to this though, but I see it as a one-off.

Crazy things Trump has said number about 50,000 at this point.

Mistakes or slips of the tongue that AOC has made number about 5.

So clearly Trump is a smart man and should be supported, while AOC is clearly a crazy lady.

Conservatives here seem to have forgotten what incoherent babble actually sounds like, so let me remind them of their VP candidate:

I take it there's no need to post any Trump clips because people understand he's off-the-charts bonkers?

You're right Star - AOC is brilliant - an absolute freakin' GENIUS - and should be the candidate for POTUS at the earliest possible moment. And all Dems should be just like her.

                          So mote it be!

Well she wouldn't go so far as to gloat that she's "a genius and a very stable genius at that!” as Trump modestly Tweeted about himself. But by comparison there's no comparison. She is.

The US and the world would be far better off than with the nut-job that's there now.
