  • Who sends the Counselor/Comforter/Advocate?

    John 14:

16 And I will ask the Father, and He will give youI will send Him to you.

    Is this a contradiction?

    Thank you.

Jesus knows the will of the Father. It is Jesus's action that leads to the provision of the Counselor.

Second, Jesus is part of the Trinity but was not able to reveal that in a distinct fashion before Pentecost.

Third, there could be noted a difference between a person who does the giving and the person who does the sending. Think of a package sent in the mail -- "can you send this for me?

7 Nevertheless, I am telling you the truth. It is for your benefit that I go away, because if I don’t go away the Counselor will not come to you. If I go, I will send Him to you.

How about: the Father sends the Spirit, through the Son ?

No contradiction whatever. At worst, it would be a matter of either of two people sending the same person (as per the Filioque) - which is demonstrably possible in mundane affairs.
Both Mike Whitney and Rushing Jaws have presented explanations that can be readily assimilated.
The Eastern Churches will (AFAIK) consider Rushing Jaws' explanation to make the filioque acceptable.
1Cor 15:34 Come to your senses as you ought and stop sinning; for I say to your shame, there are some who know not God.

        Scripture before Tradition:
but that won't prevent others from
taking it upon themselves to deprive you
of the right to call yourself Christian.

If I say I will send you something, then I get on Amazon and order it for you, I did send it to you, even though it was actually sent by Amazon.

So if Jesus says he will send the holy spirit and he says he will ask the father to send the holy spirit, it is the same thing, He sent him by asking the Father to send him. The Father, son and holy spirit are one God after all.
