Poll: Why is Trump trying so hard to keep his tax returns secret?

Trump was the first presidential nominee in decades to flatly refuse to release his tax returns. Even Mitt Romney, for whom they were embarrassing due to showing how little tax he'd paid on his income agreed to release them. Even now Trump is trying to block House Democrats from subpoenaing his tax returns.

What do people think he is trying to hide?

I think it is both he didnt pay much tax and apparent criminal behavior. I dont thing its because hes not rich, though with his eqo, if hes just a millionaire when he claims to be a billionaire, that would play into it I suppose.

He's a crook, it's as simple as that. Trump insists he would attempt to block any release of his tax returns. There's clearly a lot to hide, there's no other explanation.

Trump's primary business model in recent decades has been to lease his "Trump" brand name to other people's hotels and business ventures. The brand-name is valuable because it is associated with wealth. If and when it became public that Trump wasn't particularly wealthy (i.e. that he's lost most of the $400m he inherited through incompetence and failed business ventures), that would ruin him because his brand would be worthless for marketing purposes.

I think there's also good evidence that he's long had business relationships with the mob and with Russian mobsters / oligarchs, and that in recent decades as his incompetence drove his other business ventures into the ground that he began to rely more and more on super-dodgy deals with a variety of unsavory characters. Whether those deals will merely look fishy if they come to light, or actually are fishy through and through (knowingly laundering money etc), I'm not sure.

I think trying to hide that he paid zero / a low rate of tax would be the least of his concerns, because he can spin that as "I'm a smart businessman" and his supporters would smile and nod.

All of that. But the bottom line is, as I said, he's a crook.

Nothing. Anything you want to know about Trump's finances has been released in the comprehensive financial disclosure reports which are public record and contain far more information than you'll find in a tax return.

All of the reasons given are part of tRump's over all agenda, but also he is appealing to significant portion of his popular support for the anti-establishment Independent view of an intrusive 'big' government as a protest.

Trump is trolling the democrats. Because he can. And he knows that even if there is nothing in there, they would find a way to find something to complain about.
