    They are not silly.

And no, I didn't say I'd be fine with armed guards. I said it would not be appropriate to give that job to teachers and that if that is what is going to happen, it needs to dedicated professionals. But I'd much rather have more strict controls on gun ownership than a wild west scenario where half the teachers have holsters and guns, or a scenario where schools that are already too much like prisons now have a plethora armed guards stationed at key points around the campus.

The alternative in our present environment is to leave the teachers and students outgunned by psychopaths. Allowing teachers to arm themselves if they wish and can prove competence is a common sense solution.

You really believe that it is better to have to have the teachers run around the school armed and trained to gun down psychopaths than it would be to make and enforce laws that prevent psychopaths from buying or owning guns?

Here's the thing: laws don't actually prevent crime, they simply give us the means to punish people after the fact. Government can make all the gun laws it wants, but the fact remains that the best defense against a bad guy with a gun, is a good guy with a gun.

Which means, of course, that the offender actually has to be prosecuted under the law, convicted, and the penalty has to be meaningful. But, by that time, could have a bunch of dead people.

            A cliche', admittedly, but true.

If we put signs up at school saying "Shooting people is strictly prohibited" that would probably solve the problem.

Especially if you added "and we MEAN it this time!"
