    What a bigot!

Trump administration launches global effort to end criminalization of homosexuality

BERLIN — The Trump administration is launching a global campaign to end the criminalization of homosexuality in dozens of nations where it's still illegal to be gay, U.S. officials tell NBC News, a bid aimed in part at denouncing Iran over its human rights record.

U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell, the highest-profile openly gay person in the Trump administration, is leading the effort, which kicks off Tuesday evening in Berlin. The U.S. embassy is flying in LGBT activists from across Europe for a strategy dinner to plan to push for decriminalization in places that still outlaw homosexuality — mostly concentrated in the Middle East, Africa and the Caribbean.

“It is concerning that, in the 21st century, some 70 countries continue to have laws that criminalize LGBTI status or conduct,” said a U.S. official involved in organizing the event.

    Sounds nice.

So I guess their first action will be to undo their ban on transgender people in the military?

Why would they do that? The military is not a social experiment.

So that other countries didn't fall on the floor laughing when the Trump administration told them to be nicer to LGBT people?

The military is not a social experiment.
An interesting statement. I would tend to say, that given the fuller context of history, that is more false than true.

I am reminded of an article I read about how during WWII black soldiers and white soldiers mixed in the US ranks and how this had complex and interesting effects for the wider society as it caused a lot of white people who had been pretty fully segregated from black people up until that time to both come to see black people as competent and fully human, and how when they returned from the war it paved the way for societal changes toward desegregation.

I am also reminded of the various decisions over the years about whether women could serve in various countries militaries, and also the gradually shifting policies with regard to gay people serving (e.g. at the end of WWII to dump gay people in coastal cities with dishonorable discharges leading to several coastal cities having a large enclave of gay people who were reluctant to return home to their families in the middle of the country with a dishonorable record and so stayed and thus created sub-cultures and enclaves in several coastal cities and how the southern accent many of them had in turn seems to have led for a while to others in the gay sub-culture deliberately mimicking their accent and how this was perceived by the public to be 'effeminate' sounding speech, and how this was a factor in coastal cities in general becoming more liberal than middle america on gay issues as they had larger gay populations and more exposure to gay people; the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy of the 90s; the tolerance of today). I am similarly reminded of the historical example of the Sacred Band of Thebes comprised solely of 300 gay soldiers.

Likewise the changes in military structure have been an experiment throughout US history, with the military originally comprising of local and state militias, with the country having no national standing army. The choice to move to having a standing army, and then the choice to making the US standing army by far and away the most powerful army in the world, have all been interesting social choices with flow-on consequences.

So, in general, I find the way society has influenced the military and the military has influenced society to be quite an interesting phenomena, and why I would tend to say that not merely is "The military is not a social experiment" not any sort of truism like you apparently believe it to be, but rather that on the whole the military has indeed been a social experiment throughout history, with its very existence, its form, and the choices of the types of people to serve or not serve in it, all being major ongoing social experiments that have had truly massive flow-on consequences for our wider societies. Particularly in the modern day in which the US military is so excessively bloated to the point that 80% of roles are non-combat roles and probably the vast majority of those who train for combat roles do not end up actually personally engaging in combat, then the very presence of those people within the military itself becomes a social experiment as they are there not to actually do any fighting but to participate in an arbitrary social organisation.

The fact is we don't need them, they offer nothing in the military sense, they are confused and mentally unstable. And the military is not a social experiment - it has one goal to fight and win wars.

They offer exactly as much as any other person in the military sense.

they are confused and mentally unstable
Even if they were, its not exactly like the military doesn't already have plenty of soldiers with PTSD or depression etc. Militaries are not exactly known as bastions of mental stability to put it mildly.

it has one goal to fight and win wars.
If it started fewer wars it wouldn't lose as many of them. If the US had no military it would have a better win/loss record than the US military.

So add to the problem with confused and mentally unstable trans. No thanks.

So when Trump does something that shows he is not a bigot, it means he is a bigot according to Starlight (and probably the rest of the liberals). I am not surprised in the least.

The great diversity of human sexuality is not experimental either. Natural justice demands that anyone may be eligible for military service.

So why is it unfair to not allow trans who have psychological problems in the military? A lot of people don't pass the psychological and physical requirements for the military.
