Kamala Harris' dad says parents are 'turning in their grave' over her comments on weed and being Jamaican: report

The father of Sen. Kamala Harris is trying to distance himself from the 2020 Democratic presidential hopeful after she said her pot smoking in college stemmed from her Jamaican heritage.

Harris, D-Calif., told the nationally syndicated radio show "The Breakfast Club" earlier this month that she supports marijuana legalization at the federal level, and acknowledged that she's smoked pot in the past, saying: “I have. And I inhaled. I did inhale.”

Harris' father, Donald, disapproved of the comments, which he told the Jamaica Global Online constituted "identity politics."

"My dear departed grandmothers ... as well as my deceased parents, must be turning in their grave right now to see their family’s name, reputation and proud Jamaican identity being connected, in any way, jokingly or not with the fraudulent stereotype of a pot-smoking joy seeker and in the pursuit of identity politics," he said

Donald Harris continued: "Speaking for myself and my immediate Jamaican family, we wish to categorically dissociate ourselves from this travesty.”

            And more...

In a statement released to the website Jamaica Global Online, Donald Harris, an economist, wrote: "My dear departed grandmothers (whose extraordinary legacy I described in a recent essay on this website), as well as my deceased parents, must be turning in their grave right now to their family's name, reputation, and proud Jamaican identity being connected, in any way, jokingly or not with the fraudulent stereotype of a pot-smoking joy seeker and in the pursuit of identity politics. Speaking for myself and my immediate Jamaican family, we wish to categorically dissociate ourselves from this controversy." Father's Day should be interesting.

What trips up Kamala Harris is an evident desire to please her audience. She wants no enemies to her left, no identity politics left untouched. She can't run as a prosecutor—crime fighting is so 1990s—but she can run as brash, bold, and woke. Her verbal miscues are possible evidence that this latest political fashion doesn't quite fit. She has made a habit of making unforced errors, and the game is only in its first month. Harris's Democratic opponents may be too blinkered or bashful to exploit this weakness. That will not be a problem for her Republican opponent.

LOL. That was my impression when I read her story that she smoked pot in college.

And with Pocahontas drinking that beer.

Soooo, she's in effect stereotyping all Jamaicans as potheads. Nice.

Anywho, that particular interview has been a source of problems for here:

Source: Wait. Was Kamala Harris smoking pot while prosecuting people for smoking pot?

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) said that she listened to the music of rap artists Tupac and Snoop Dogg while smoking marijuana.

Harris, who announced her candidacy for the 2020 presidential race earlier in February, recently became a proponent of legalizing the recreational use of the drug, saying that it is something that gives people "joy."

Her admission brings up a big question about the timing of her admitted drug use and her time as a prosecutor.

                What did she say, anyway?

During a Monday interview with WWPR-FM's "The Breakfast Club," Harris said that she listened to Tupac and Snoop Dogg while smoking marijuana

"I have [smoked pot] and I inhaled, I did inhale," she admitted. "It was a long time ago, but yes. I just broke news."

She later added that she thinks there's joy to be found in smoking pot.

"Listen, I think that it gives more people joy," Harris said. "We need more joy."

                So what about the timing?

So Harris, by her own admission, was smoking pot and listening to Tupac and Snoop Dogg — while she was in college.

Here's the thing: Harris finished her schooling in 1989. Tupac didn't release an album until 1991.

As for Snoop Dogg, well, he didn't release his first album until 1993.

Harris did, however, start working as a deputy district attorney in Alameda County, California, in 1990, where part of her job would have been to enforce existing drug laws.

                Anything else?

                Oh yes.

During her time as a prosecutor, Harris was as hard-nosed on drug laws as you could get. And when Harris was California Attorney General, she opposed the legalization of marijuana "as late as 2014," according to Reason.

Reason's Justin Monticello and Katherine Mangu-Ward wrote:

Harris is a former drug warrior who is now refashioning herself as pro-legalization. That's a positive shift — but not a reason to rewrite the past or ignore the patterns it reveals in her judgment. For years after the cultural tide had turned in support of criminal justice reforms, Harris continued to support lock-'em-up policies that disproportionately hurt minorities.

Reason's Scott Shackford also wrote that Harris isn't being forthright when it comes to not previously being opposed to marijuana legalization.

"Harris has a lengthy history as a prosecutor in California of opposing marijuana legalization," Shackford explains. "She opposed Proposition 19, the first failed attempt in California to legalize recreational use of marijuana."

When Harris was running for attorney general in 2010, her campaign said, "Spending two decades in courtrooms, Harris believes that drug selling harms communities. Harris supports the legal use of medicinal marijuana but does not support anything beyond that."

So while she was smoking pot she was energetically prosecuting people for smoking pot.

So why are liberals all for allowing smoking pot, but against smoking cigarettes? Pot has more chemicals and tar and bad things for your lungs than cigarettes do. Why act like health matters when it comes to cigarettes but not when it comes to smoking pot?

They want to control cigarettes, how much sugar we eat, blah blah. But drugs? Go for it!

I don't think candidates families are relevant in general. My concern about Kamala on the weed issue is that as a (not-progressive) prosecutor she was prosecuting people for weed usage at the same time as she was allegedly using it herself.

Her rather 'tough on crime' prosecutorial record seems quite at odds with the progressive positions she claims to hold now. I haven't seen her speak to this apparent contradiction.

Pot is commonly consumed by methods other than smoking it. It can be eaten in cookies or put in beverages etc. I welcome you to eat cigarettes if you wish to do so.

I am against the idea of smoking pot just as I am smoking cigarettes, as smoking anything is bad for lung health. If I were to try marijuana I would be sure to try it in food rather than as a smoke, but that is at least partially due to me having a lung health issue.

Pot has more chemicals and tar and bad things for your lungs than cigarettes do.
I have been unable to find data confirming this. They appear to be about equally bad. People who smoke cigarettes commonly smoke more per day than people who smoke marijuana, but people who smoke marijuana tend to deliberately hold their breath after inhaling thus absorbing more into their lungs per smoke.

Given cigarettes are legal to smoke it seems rational for marijuana to be legal to smoke too, since they are roughly comparable in harm done.

Why act like health matters when it comes to cigarettes but not when it comes to smoking pot?
Liberals generally advocate for rational evidence based policy across all recreational drugs. Our society's history of allowing cigarettes and alcohol, both of which are pretty nasty, but irrationally banning much less harmful drugs, is generally what is argued against.

Here is a chart published in a medical journal that attempts to quantify comparative drug addictiveness and harm:

They want to control cigarettes, how much sugar we eat, blah blah. But drugs? Go for it!
"Legalize, tax, and regulate" is a common liberal statement with regard to drugs. "Control" as you put it, is the 'regulate' part of that statement. Liberals, in general, tend to be reasonably fine with the government making evidence-based public health decisions to incentivise or disincentivise certain public behaviors - especially as an alternative to authoritarian actions such as banning a thing. e.g. there is a high tax on cigarettes in my country to try and disincentivise smoking them.

Because, from my understanding, cigarettes are more dangerous to your health than marijuana. It makes absolutely no sense to have cigarettes be legal but marijuana not. Either criminalize both or legalize both, but be consistent.
