  • Passing of my grandfather

I don't normally post things about my personal life, but here goes. My grandfather passed recently. He was in his 90s, and while I am no stranger to death...I lived with him for several years, and I was closer to him than anyone I've ever known who passed. He was someone I really looked up to.

He was a WWII veteran who joined the Navy when he was 17. He was a humble man, so much so that most of the family had no idea what he did in the war, even his children. The man never talked about the war, though I recall one or two funny (non-combat) stories about life in the Navy. After his death I learned he was a coxswain, piloting amphibious landing craft in the South Pacific. As a farmboy from a rural area thrust into a dangerous job in the war, he promised God that if he could just make it home alive, he would serve Him the rest of his life. And he made good on that promise in so many ways.

Anyways, he was a good man. And because of some other things in my personal life, I'm just having a difficult time. I'd appreciate prayer for my family and I.
"If you believe, take the first step, it leads to Jesus Christ. If you don't believe, take the first step all the same, for you are bidden to take it. No one wants to know about your faith or unbelief, your orders are to perform the act of obedience on the spot. Then you will find yourself in the situation where faith becomes possible and where faith exists in the true sense of the word." - Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of Discipleship

For those of us who spent our lives looking up to our fathers, their loss may be one of the hardest to endure. Your dad was truly one of the "Greatest Generation" that took America from good to greatness.

Praying for you and your family in this time of grief and reflection.

As somebody who never knew either of my grandfathers, I kind of envy you having had a good relationship with yours.

May the Holy Spirit minister peace to your heart in having known and lost (for a short time) such a good man.
The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.
