As far as I know, McCain gave the dossier to the FBI. I have not seen evidence that he "smeared it around capital hill" or gave copies to the media. Do you have sources for this claim?

Source: Sen. John McCain's role in Trump dossier intrigue detailed in deposition

--Scrolling section showing 35 pages of documents--

Kramer's testimony also provides more complete details of key events from the time McCain learned of the dossier during the November 2016 Halifax International Security Forum. McCain had said he learned of the dossier after Kramer introduced him to a retired British diplomat who knew of the dossier. Kramer said that diplomat approached him presumably as a way to connect with McCain, who was deemed an influential conduit.

McCain addressed his role in the dossier drama in his 2018 memoir, "The Restless Wave: Good Times, Just Causes, Great Fights, and Other Appreciations."

"I had an obligation to bring to the attention of appropriate officials unproven accusations I could not assess myself, and which, were any of them true, would create a vulnerability to the designs of a hostile foreign power," McCain and co-author Mark Salter wrote in the book. "I discharged that obligation, and I would do it again. Anyone who doesn't like it can go to hell."

In the deposition, Kramer said of McCain's views on the dossier: "... I don't think in the least that he viewed this in political terms."

          Neither did Kramer, he said.

Kramer: Steele thought McCain could give dossier 'a little more oomph'Kramer: McCain wanted to do 'due diligence' before giving dossier to FBIThe McCain associate distributed dossier to BuzzFeed, other media

Kramer acknowledged during the deposition that he gave a copy of the memos to reporters at BuzzFeed News, McClatchy news service, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal and National Public Radio. Kramer said Steele and Simpson were aware of some of his contacts with media outlets; he said Steele specifically asked him to meet with a BuzzFeed reporter and veteran journalist Carl Bernstein, which he did.

So I'm reading all of this to say Kramer distributed the document - not McCain. Am I missing something?

You took from the story that Kramer was acting on his own without McCain's knowledge? Wow. There are none so blind as those who refuse to see.

I said nothing about McCain's knowledge. However, I did not see a place where anything said McCain required this to be done, knew of it before hand, or approved it. Did I miss that somewhere?

So then - I take it that this is more speculation on your part. I note that you do this a great deal. Oddly enough, the speculation always seems to affirm your pre-existing political disposition. Odd, that...

OK - so where is the evidence you base the claim on? I'd like to examine it.

It sounds to me like you're working with a variation of the "The Limbaugh Theorem" which described how willfully naive liberals tried to claim that Obama had no knowledge of or control over things that members of his own administration were doing right under his nose.

And then there's this: "McCain admitted to personally handing the dossier to then-FBI Director James Comey, but he refused repeated requests for comment about whether he had a role in providing the dossier to BuzzFeed..."

Several of you on this website do not seem to understand the distinction between "not X" and "X has not been shown." Substituting, there is a distinction between "McCain did not know" and "You have not shown that McCain knew."

So you still have not shown "McCain knew." The best that can be said is "we don't know." Unless, of course, you want to speculate on the meaning of the silence, which you appear more than ready to do.

Do you have any positive evidence that McCain knew that I can examine - or just more speculation? Until then - I think I'm going to stay with "I don't know." You are free to try/convict on the basis of speculation and tabloid articles if you wish.
