Stormy Daniels’ ex-lawyer Michael Avenatti arrested for alleged $20 million extortion scheme against Nike, embezzling client’s money, defrauding bank

Celebrity lawyer Michael Avenatti has been arrested on charges related to an alleged $20 million extortion of the athletic apparel company Nike, federal authorities in New York City said Monday.

Avenatti also is charged in a separate federal case out of Los Angeles, where he is accused of embezzling a client’s money “in order to pay his own expense and debts,” and of “defrauding a bank in Mississippi,” prosecutors said.

Avenatti, 48, had represented porn star Stormy Daniels in her lawsuit against President Donald Trump and his former lawyer Michael Cohen related to a non-disclosure agreement she had signed on the eve of the 2016 presidential election to keep quiet about her alleged affair with Trump in exchange for a $130,000 payment.

A press conference is scheduled to discuss the charges against Avenatti in Los Angeles on Monday afternoon. Avenatti is due to be presented in federal court on Monday.
The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.

Eh, it's just a small matter that needs to be cleared up before his presidential campaign begins in earnest.

Interesting --- prosecutors are announcing this as "complaints" rather than "indictments". Usually the announcement would be the latter rather than the former.

I'm guessing they're trying to stop some pretty aggressive ongoing activity, and intend to keep him locked up for trial.

Also, it appears the announcement indicates coordination between the Los Angeles activity and the NYC case.

Maybe he and Jesse Smollett can share a cell.

I wonder how CNN will cover this since they darn near made him a host of a number of their programs for several months considering how much fawning coverage and time they gave him.

I'm always still in trouble again

No idea but I eagerly hope he shows up on CNBC's American Greed soon.

So, it's sounding like the reason that the prosecution is going with "criminal complaint" rather than waiting for an indictment is because there were LOTS of "irons in the fire" by Avenatti, and it was a way for the prosecutors to get out information (a warning) to prospective targets of Avenatti's. There was quite a bit of information in the press conference by the prosecution - way more than you would normally see in a white collar crime.

They must have gotten the same memo Pelosi did when she started downplaying impeachment.

I just wish I could have seen their faces when the Mueller report dropped.
