Biblical Languages 301 Guidelines

This is where we come to delve into the biblical text. Theology is not our foremost thought, but we realize it is something that will be dealt with in nearly every conversation. Feel free to use the original languages to make your point (meaning Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic). This is an exegetical discussion area, so please limit topics to purely biblical ones.

This is not the section for debates between theists and atheists. While a theistic viewpoint is not required for discussion in this area, discussion does presuppose a respect for the integrity of the Biblical text (or the willingness to accept such a presupposition for discussion purposes) and a respect for the integrity of the faith of others and a lack of an agenda to undermine the faith of others.

  • Luke 9:22 "must" be killed

Luke 9:22 - And he said, 'THE SON OF MAN must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.'

I'm interested in the meaning of "must" in "must be killed."

What exactly does "must" mean in the Greek behind the word?

    Thanks.

ειπων οτι δει τον υιον του ανθρωπου πολλα παθειν και αποδοκιμασθηναι απο των πρεσβυτερων και αρχιερεων και γραμματεων και αποκτανθηναι και τη τριτη ημερα αναστηναι

    saying - that (alternatively: "... )- it is necessary - the - son - of - man(kind) - much - to suffer - and - to get repudiated - from - of the - elders - and - high priests - and - scribes (jurists) - and - to be killed - and - the - third - day - to get revived.

Only one occurrence of "must" in the Byzantine Majority Text.

1Cor 15:34 Come to your senses as you ought and stop sinning; for I say to your shame, there are some who know not God.

    Scripture before Tradition:
but that won't prevent others from
taking it upon themselves to deprive you
of the right to call yourself Christian.

The idea it expresses is, that X cannot but happen, since that it should happen is part of God’s purpose. It is, for that reason, anything but an expression of determinism or fate.

Some translations use "behoove" pretty which is pretty much saying the Scriptures must be fulfilled.

          https://www.blueletterbible.org/lang...YLT#lexResults
it is necessary, there is need of, it behooves, is right and proper
necessity lying in the nature of the case

          Luke 9:22
saying -- 'It behoveth<1163> the Son of Man to suffer many things, and to be rejected by the elders, and chief priests, and scribes, and to be killed, and the third day to be raised.'

Last time used in the NT:

          Revelation 22:6
And said to me: "These the Words Faithful and True. And Lord, the GOD of the spirits of the holy Prophets commissions the messenger of Him to show to the bond-servants of Him which-things is binding/behooving1183> to be becoming In/en <1722> Swiftness/tacei<5034>. [Revelation 1:1]
