  • Mitch McConnell will propose raising tobacco age to 21 nationwide

    https://www.usnews.com/news/politics...-tobacco-to-21

I think there's a couple things going on here:

It's not hyperbole to say that vaping is an epidemic in the high schools nationwide. I read one local news article about how kids are so addicted that they're unable to get through one class without sneaking off to the bathroom for a vape. So they want to address that.

Also, the writing on the wall seems pretty clear that the nation is heading for marijuana legalization. Trump is open to it, and even John Boehner is lobbying for marijuana firms now. It's a matter of when, not if. If the tobacco age is 21, that will make it easier to make the age for marijuana the same.
"I am not angered that the Moral Majority boys campaign against abortion. I am angry when the same men who say, "Save OUR children" bellow "Build more and bigger bombers." That's right! Blast the children in other nations into eternity, or limbless misery as they lay crippled from "OUR" bombers! This does not jell." - Leonard Ravenhill

So, they'll push to have 16 year olds vote, but not vape.

And vaping can be SO annoying --- it seems like some of those doing the vaping really enjoy releasing a huge cloud of "vape".
The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.

Minimum ages will do nothing to curb vaping by HS students who want to vape, just like liquor laws don't actually prevent kids who want to drink from drinking. A highly motivated teen will always know where to go to get what they want. If we could find a way to channel that ingenuity into academics instead of self-harm, we'd be doing astoundingly well.

Every now and then, when I see someone stopped at a stoplight and they let out a HUGE puff of vape smoke, I ask if their car is on fire...

It's true it wouldn't stop people in the 18-20 range from vaping, but it's silly to claim it would do nothing to decrease the amount.

Right. I forgot my standard tweb qualifications.

In my humble opinion, I mean that statistically, I would be surprised if it does anything to decrease the amount. In this case the "would do nothing" is an idiom that commonly reflects that. I regret any misunderstanding.

You need to keep a spray bottle of water in your car and rush over and squirt them and then apologize because you thought the car was on fire.

Ya know, launching rockets was a big thing when were were kids - perhaps spurred on by the activities at Cape Canaveral.
